[release] Chris Huhne has resigned as energy secretary after the director of public prosecutions announced he would face a criminal charge in connection with allegedly dodging a speeding offence. He will be replaced at the Department for Energy and Climate Change by Ed Davey, the business minister.
In a televised announcement on Friday morning, the DPP, Keir Starmer, said Huhne's former wife, Vicky Pryce, would also be prosecuted over allegations she took speeding penalty points on his behalf in 2003.
Huhne is to be charged with perverting the course of justice, Starmer said. Huhne said the decision to charge him was "deeply regrettable", adding: "I am innocent of these charges and I intend to fight this in the courts."
Pryce, who divorced Huhne in January last year, is to be charged with perverting the course of justice. Huhne and Pryce were told of the decision an hour before Starmer made his announcement.
They are due to appear before Westminster magistrates court on 16 February.
Pryce said in a statement released by her lawyers: "As the CPS [Crown Prosecution Service] have decided to prosecute it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage. Obviously I hope for a quick resolution of the case. In the meantime I will be taking a little time off over the next few days to be with my family."[/release]

Why resign over that? It's not like he was caught with a transvestite prostitute or something.

It's not what he did, it's that he got his wife to cover for him and lied about it this whole time

It's related to a speeding charge, that doesn't make him a bad person or unfit to be a secretary. Who wouldn't try and get out of a speeding charge with how much it can fuck up your life, especially if he is actually as innocent as he says?
Personally I don't care what he does in his own life as long as he gets his job done properly.
He probably wouldn't have had to resign if he'd just man up at the time a and pay his fine for speeding.
Sad day for UK Politics, Chris Huhne was (in my opinion) one of the few politicians without his head completely stuck up his ass.

He is being charged with perverting the course of justice, it doesn't have anything to do with the speeding.

Plus he cheated on his wife, then broke up with her, so his wife dumped him in it. He kind of deserves it in my opinion.

Sounds to me like he switched seats with his wife quickly to avoid the possibility of this exact thing happening. Unless there is more to it, this sounds to me like a pretty innocent thing to lose your livelihood over.
It's just my opinion, but I don't care about what he does in his relationships or in his car unless it was something completely over the top.
I'm not defending the guy, he is getting charged and he deserves it if he is infact guilty.
However, losing his job over something like this, especially while he maintains his innocence? I can't really agree with it, but that's just my opinion.

Not quite, from what I understand he got caught by a camera and claimed that his wife was driving the car (I assume they were both insured on it). Its quite simply perverting the course of justice which is something that a cabinet minster shouldn't have lingering over him.
His ex-wife has to be the stupidest person on the planet, why would you grass yourself in and maybe get 6 months in prison?
