The story takes place in the world of Remnant, which is filled with supernatural forces and shadowy creatures known as the "Creatures of Grimm". Prior to the events of the series, mankind waged a battle of survival against the Grimm before discovering the power of a mysterious element called Dust, which allowed them to fight back against the monsters. In the present day, Dust is used to power magical abilities and weapons. Those who use these abilities to battle the Grimm are known as Huntsmen or Huntresses. The series focuses on four girls, each with her own unique weapon and powers. Together, they form team RWBY at Beacon Academy in the city of Vale, where they are trained to become Huntresses alongside team CRDL (pronounced 'cardinal') and team JNPR (pronounced 'juniper').
I only found this a few days ago and couldn't find a thread on it so here I am making one.

I'm certainly not the first to say the series has a few issues - most of which can be traced back to the tiny budget because it's a web series. Sometimes the animations is a bit shitty and the voice acting (particularly in a first few episodes) can sometimes suck. There is only so much a team consisting of half-a-dozen people can do after all. Regardless, the bad certainly does not out-weigh the good.
Still, with the popularity of the first volume/season I expect next season will have a larger budget and most of the issues will be sorted out.
The music is fucking sweet though.

I actually enjoyed the first two episodes. Not as good as other stuff RT has done, and I'd much rather watch their employees dick about in GTA:V or something else, but pretty fun nonetheless. A friend of my, basically a Monty Oum fanboy, went nuts over this and was obnoxious while I watched it with him, so that might be why I did not enjoy it as much as other people seem to have.
It is a guilty pleasure for me.
Friend of mine kept going on but i just couldn't get into, no matter how many times i tried.
I'm too bothered by the animation. They keep going and back and forth between half-arsed motion capture and robotic handanimation. It bugs the hell out of me.
I like it, but the voice acting is awful.
This show starts at a 3, and gradually climbs its way to a 6 over 4 seasons. It's hard to recommend to people due to that fact alone, but I can't say I'm not excited to see where it all ends up.
Season 4 has been a bit of a dud so far though.
Why the fuck are you posting in a three year old thread?
because why make a new one?
Why the fuck are you posting in a three year old thread?
A discussion thread for the show already exists, so why make a new one?
I binged the first 3 volumes a little while ago, and I can say without a doubt that the only thing keeping me even looking back are the action sequences. Around the at times awful awful animation for everything else, the fighting was what kept me on and even those got more stale in vol 4. As well as the direction in general for volume 4 just makes me sigh and look somewhere else.
Yeah, it's a guilty pleasure in the fight scenes and the cool weapon designs. Other than that I couldn't recommend it to someone without calling it a knockoff anime with janky MMD clipping models, probably the worst story elements from both western cartoons and anime just shoved in together, and at times neat 2 minute fight scenes you have to wait almost 10 minutes for
This show's quality is definitely lacking in some places, but I kept going through Volume 1 and 2 because the fights were well directed and overall some of my favorites in an animated show. However, with Monty gone, Volume 3 kind of slipped in this aspect, but then they dropped the kiddy act and started bringing in a plot I thought was pretty intense and actually a little dark (which surprised me because of the complete lack of plot in the first two volumes and very PG feeling).
However, in Volume 4 I made it 6 episodes before I called it quits because the plot is advancing WAY too slow and Ruby had her chance at being the actual main character for once rather than a cardboard cutout (and squandered it). Not to mention, the fight scenes up to where I watched were bordering the "too ridiculous to be good" line.
This show had potential, but they dropped the broody feeling of Volume 3 and replaced it with a shoddy attempt at making multiple disconnected plots and doesn't even come close to the darker side of the previous volume. I'm not sure what the hell it wants to do because they try introducing so much lore and background plot and then not actually making it relevant.
I wish some of the most hardcore fans would acknowledge some of the problems. The voice acting is bad to just OK, the fight scenes might be good, but the animation is awful, and the plot isn't as well written as both the fans and writers think it is.
I can see the potential, but the series is severely limited.

Nepotism.

I definitely see all the glaring flaws about this series, I especially dislike the animation and the character models, but something about it is so charming

It's probably because everyone at RoosterTeeth are friends, so the charm we see in some of their videos was bound to rub off on RWBY.
...We had a RWBY thread? Huh.
I think despite the fact that the animation and writing aren't exactly the best, it's the world and characters (oddly enough, even though I just said the writing wasn't the best.) that keep me so invested in the show.
I honestly think we could have gone without magical macguffins in the plot, and just stuck to the grimm and darkness of the world itself as the main problems of the show.
I also find that the fanfiction can be really good for it too, but when there isn't a whole lot of detail on the world and show, I guess that should come naturally.
But despite all of that, there's certainly something in the shows heart that makes me love it and be inspired by it for some reason. Probably Monty's memory.

The OST, character designs and especially the pre-Volume 3 fight scenes makes RWBY a major guilty pleasure of mine.
Though I'm having a hard time keeping up with Volume 4 with its slow pacing and ok at best fight scenes. Monty being gone was a major blow to the show's fight scenes and it'll probably take a while before the team could make a fight scene as comparable to something like Neo vs Yang or even the Nevermore fight in Volume 1.

Since this thread is back from the darkest depths of GD, here's the new episode that just came out on youtube.

Because at this point they are kind of scrambling to keep things relevant, and she's a friend of several staffers.

I feel like Monty was the only good thing about the show and he was holding it together.
