Donald Trump has secured the Republican nomination for US president on day two of the Republican National Convention. The House Speaker, Paul Ryan, urged delegates to unite behind Mr Trump, a day after splits in the party were evident as the convention opened. The Trump campaign also faces accusations a speech by Mr Trump's wife Melania on Monday was plagiarised.
Tuesday's speakers focused almost exclusively on attacking Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee.New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a former prosecutor, held a mock trial for Mrs Clinton as the crowd chanted "lock her up".
List of surprised people:
Cruz
Kasich
Don't worry guys. He doesn't have a chance. :downs:
Legitimately terrifying that he got it.

Let's hope that he at least fails to secure the Presidency, otherwise we're all fucked.
I guess I'm a bit annoyed that Rand lost so early, but this is still infinitely better than anyone else that was running.
I'm just glad I have the option of living in a different country.
Some people I know are supporting Trump because Hilary is a liar.
Well, it's one shitty person or the other shitty person.
Several people I know who are VERY left leaning are voting Trump because they are so completely and utterly fed up. A couple of them want to watch things burn, and a couple of them are falling into neo-reactionary behaviors while rapidly swinging to extreme right groups.
It's fascinating to watch. They legitimately believe the system has failed, and are out for blood, one way or another.
I'm seriously surprised that people believe Hilary is a better candidate than Trump.
Forgive my ignorance, but by the looks of it, Hilary has severely fucked up in the past and has some extreme views, Trump just shittalks.

I find it hilarious that your flagdog is China.
Remember back at the start of this, everyone was thinking, 'No way in hell he'll get this far'
And look at it now

What extremist views are you talking about?

I'm currently in China for the summer, and have been reading about all the shit going down in the US from across the Pacific Ocean. And if Trump becomes president, I might just come back here and stay.
Though given Trump's foreign policy views, even that might not be enough to avoid the fallout.

From one oligarchy to another.
What exactly happened today, and why was I reading that Alaska was pissed?
Was it simply the GOP delegates voting for the nomination?

Why half ass it? Just stay there if you seriously think you would be better off.
How did this happen, Trump is also an anti-vaxxer because he seems to think that vaccines cause autism. Like how the FUCK? Are the republican voters really behind this guy? The guy who had some of his companies file for bankruptcy?
And those 2 reasons are just a couple of the hunderds why this man should never become president but yet here he is, as a candidate.
hillary isn't much better but at least she isn't trump

I speak partly in jest- I'm less than willing to leave my home country and the life I know for at least 4 years, and there's no guarantee that Trump will get the Presidency.
That said, I am quite afraid about what will happen if he does, and it saddens me how far he's already gotten.
If you guys had any hope left in your fellow americans, this is the time to abandon it. Our country nominated a racist orange guy. Let that sink in.
2016 is an argument against democracy
What a shame
Don't get some of you people's reaction to this. We knew it was coming, it's no surprise.
Save your shock for the presidential election, that's where it could be anyone's game.

I think we expected the Republican establishment to put up more of a fight. Colorado and Utah delegates both tried to vote to have delegates unbound from who they were pledged to, but failed to receive enough support of the states. After that, there was no more attempt
まさか!
I think this was the election both parties went "well they're sending their worst candidate out, why waste one of our good ones, let's send our worst guy out too".
isn't trump the lesser of two evils. i mean, he might make bad decisions but at least he's honest and not a liar

What's wrong with being orange?

As much as I hate to admit it I'd prefer a liar who will probably just maintain the status quo than someone honest who has espoused ideals I greatly disagree with.

That's the image he wants, but it's really not difficult to dig up lists upon lists of his lies.
It's all in his presentation of confidence and not mincing words that makes people believe he's any more honest than the competition. When it comes down to it, he'll say any incendiary bullshit if it gets him in the headlines. I don't think anyone can say for certain how he's gonna act once this popularity contest is over - it's easy to talk shit about status quo if you're not in power, but when you actually are status quo, you either have to bail (happened during the Brexit) or try to keep blaming others. Then again, Trump's a millionaire businessman and somehow has people convinced he's not part of the establishment he opposes, so who knows if he'll feel any increased pressure at all.

This is why people shouldn't laugh at and make fun of people like Trump or Farage, now they are fucking up the program.

he called Hillary a "terrific" secretary of state in 2012. two years later she was "the worst secretary of state ever." he invited her to his wedding. either he lied the whole time and actually hated her (meaning he was paying favors to influential people - like a corrupt politician), he's lying now and doesn't actually hate her, or in two years he backed out of a decade-long friendship and dumped multiple positive endorsements of hillary.
Plus it's very likely he's either been dodging taxes for decades or he's lying significantly about how much wealth he actually has. Say what you want about Hillary - she's released her tax returns publicly and has never once paid 0% in federal taxes like Trump did the last time he released his taxes thirty years ago.
It's very easy to show that Trump's a two-faced chunk of orange sleaze, even more than Hillary is. Honesty shouldn't be the only trait to care about - and if you're measuring honesty, Hillary ran on a platform of a post-Reagan conservative-era "New Democrat" and fulfilled her more conservative promises then - and now that she's promoting more progressive promises, why wouldn't she fulfill those? adapting to the will of your constituents is called being a representative, not necessarily flip-flopping or lying. Trump's not honest, neither is Hillary (necessarily), but I'd rather have an experienced politician with views I agree on and significant experience in international relations than a bumbling orange businessman with no political experience who's only foreign endorsements are far-right xenophobic nationalists and literal dictators.

I would say that Hillary Clinton is also a pretty good argument against democracy.
I still prefer democracy over the systems that would probably replace it though for the time being.
