Illinois Bill divesting state money from companies that boycott Israel passes
A bill barring the state from investing in companies that boycott Israel will make its way to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office after passing the House unopposed on Monday.
Senate Bill 1761 creates the Illinois Investment Policy Board, which will manage a list of companies with controversial positions on foreign relations for Illinois to divest funds from, including those that boycott Israel.
Freedom of speech means freedom to boycott.

Why do so many government officials have such a hard on for Israel? I've honestly never understood this.

Evangelical Christian constituents, mostly. As absurd as it sounds, a lot of them believe the prophecy that Israel will rise to the "head of the nations" in the end times and thus, we should have a strong alliance with them.

The pro-Israel lobby tries to get protestant voters to believe that Israel holds some religious significance, thereby making the religious right dependent on Israel.
For everyone else it's a matter of not wanting to give up on something they've invested half a century of work as well as billions if not trillions of dollars into.

I'm not about to shout conspiracy shit here, but this and this somehow seem connected (even if the Canadian bill would be effectively toothless except against literal advocacy of genocide).

Its just part of a large-scale attack on those who are boycotting, enemies of free speech have gotten past the stages of ignoring and ridiculing Israel boycotters, now they're fighting it as desperately as they can.
While I think anyone that tries to 'boycott Israel' is a downright simpleton and should be mocked relentlessly, legislation forcing a certain list of companies to buy from is pretty overly authoritarian.

What about the people who boycotted South Africa during apartheid? The method is exactly the same.
We don't "have enough time or resources" to re-open the ancient Amtrak station in Rockford to connect to Chicago, which could provide hundreds of jobs during the reconstruction process and allow quick and easy transport to one of the largest economic hubs in the state, allowing thousands of people to commute weekly to jobs and help feed the ailing job market in northern Illinois...
Oh but we have juuuust enough to put forward a feelgood bill that, for some odd reason, dictates the state's interaction with a FOREIGN FUCKING COUNTRY
Goddamn. More like Bruce Rectum.

I didn't claim or suggest a conspiracy. I've said the anti-free-speech folks are now trying to suppress the boycotts on a legislative level because the movement has gained enough popularity they can't ignore it or dismissively ridicule it anymore.

I think it's more the breivik effect. Anders Breivik is both an anti-semite and an islamophobe. These contradict when it comes to israel; he supports israels zionism because he hates muslims and doesn't want to see a palestinian state. I think his extremist beliefs are a more radical version of what the jewish lobby in the united states believes.

That's the saddest thing I've read all day. People who believe in that sort of crap should be nowhere near public office.

Actually it is pretty fucking obvious both those are related to Isreali lobbying. You are such a joke sometimes Monkah.
