I've really been considering -applying for ShackTac lately. I had forgotten until recently that Dslyecxi's guide was the reason I bought arma 2 a few years ago.
I might re-apply sometime soon, been playing a lot of ArmA 2 recently on the Tactical Gamer Bravo server, which is quite similar but has nowhere near the scale of ShackTac, and the organisation is often lacking. The largest number of players I saw on that server at once was about 30, there's gotta be something like triple that number in this video.

They use ACRE for in-game which goes through TS for both local and radio so you should be fine

That's perfectly fine. Aslong as you stay for a few missions.
It would be awesome to play with these guys but I am afraid I don't know any military lingo or what have you and I would suck at following orders. Still wish I had ARMA 2 though, I am probably going to just wait for ARMA 3.

You don't need to know any lingo, and I'm sure they run you through like a 30 minute little tutorial they've made up as part of the recruitment process, just like other Realism units. It's nothing big or fancy except with the SOCOM unit which is just ridiculous
15th MEU Realism Unit run you through two short classes and you're good to go for their Bi weekly Squad trainings, weekly Fire Team trainings, and Monthly 60+ player Ops, and own their own Recruiting server people play on that's a fun for all play at your liesure type of deal, which you can play on freely. It's open to the public. They require you to have certain amount of Promotion Points and the correct 'classes' taken to be promoted up to certain ranks and positions so you don't have to do anything you don't want to, and won't do anything you won't know how to.
A lot of these units use ACRE and ACE2 which make for the most realistic military experience you're going to get outside of joining the real thing. Best $30 you'll ever spend on entertainment, you should pick up Combined Ops

Sounds pretty crazy, I would probably get yelled at or something for being a complete dipship though. I am not used to the whole tactical simulator group thing, I am have been a run and gun shooter player all my life. It looks pretty engaging though, can't get anything like that in any other game it seems.
