One step closer to Science Fiction space ships. :science:
Now I know that if we eventually do make tractor beams, it will look like this. :buddy:
I wonder how short distances they're talking about. Meters? Centimeters? Millimeters? [editline]3rd March 2011[/editline] You never know with the scientists.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that best of all, the HL2 Physics Gun is no longer entirely out of the realm of reality! And we can also get a hold of Khan and create a race of supermen. Either one sounds good.
this is nanoscale shit so yeah
I think just a few nanometers
Unfortunately it could be the case.
Now I can finally execute my plan using this "tractor beam".
Unfortunately it could be the case.
Baby steps man, technology is constantly improving
and to think, the technology being developed today would've been unthinkable even 50 years ago
Tractor beams remind me of Apocalypse tanks in Red Alert 3
read this bout months ago in a thread made by Eudoxia or someone else
cant wait for a small glove version of the tractor beam

So the beam wont be visible.
Don't look into that beam though.
read this bout months ago in a thread made by Eudoxia or someone else
Yeah sure, the research paper was submitted the 24th February 2011.
While it may only be nanometers now, technology is exponentially improving, so after a few decades/centuries this could be used instead of cranes and the like to lift heavy objects, in spaceships as tractor beams or perhaps even in hand-held devices to lift stuff around. Stuff like this makes me optimistic about a sci-fi-ish future in (hopefully) my lifetime :)
Don't look into that beam though.
You'd get your eyes pulled out :barf:
Time to line the exterior of my spaceship with mirrors! :downs:

Backward Pulling Force from a Forward Propagating Beam Jun Chen, Jack Ng, Zhifang Lin, C. T. Chan (Submitted on 24 Feb 2011) You didn't read the article either. Because if you did then you would know that it wasn't the Australian research. [editline]3rd March 2011[/editline] The article is right in front of you. The links are there too. Click them. Use your eyes. http://arxiv.org/abs/1102.4905
No because there are no(not enough) particles in space For the light to reflect. So the beam wont be visible.
I was actually wondering the same thing about Dead Space a few days ago. [editline]3rd March 2011[/editline] But in an atmosphere, it would be visible.
No you didn't. Backward Pulling Force from a Forward Propagating Beam
It's still a new use for an existing tractor beam, okay you're right.
and to think, the technology being developed today would've been unthinkable even 50 years ago
Fucking dark ages.
perhaps even in hand-held devices to lift stuff around
No hints towards Half life 2 here.

Yes computer technology improves at a predictable rate, that does not mean all fields of science advance this quickly and uniformly. Things behave quite differently at the micro level so hearing this news is not nearly as shocking as a full macro level tractor beam. Remember, we still have no unified theory for physics at the micro and macro levels. There are many other impressive feats done at the micro level that would be awesome at a macro level but simply hit insurmountable roadblocks. Ever hear of super positioning? A particle being in two places at once?
I love science, makes me proud to live on Earth.
