• Elon Musk takes Donald Trump to task on US-China car trade as Tesla eyes factory in China
Tesla CEO Elon Musk raised the issue of US-China automotive import and export with President Donald Trump today in a series of tweets embedded below. The conversation is especially interesting amidst Tesla eyeing its own factory in China. As we recently reported, Tesla has been doing great in China. The California-based automaker doubled its sales to over $2 billion in China last year. That’s despite solely relying on exporting its cars from the US to China where they are subject to a 25% import tariff. ... China has strong protectionist laws that prohibit foreign automakers to own over 50% of local manufacturing facilities. The government has often discussed removing the constraint when it comes to manufacturing electric vehicles, but it doesn’t ever materialize.
https://electrek.co/2018/03/08/elon-musk-donald-trump-us-china-car-trade-tesla-factory/
Damn, Elon bringing the heat. Too bad Donnie is double-fisting China and Russia's ding dong into his swamphole
I'd personally rather they not be doing any business with that tyrannical dictatorship at all tbh.
I'd personally rather they not be doing any business with that tyrannical dictatorship at all tbh.
The Chinese market is too big for any car maker to ignore.
The Chinese market is too big for any car maker to ignore.
Big enough to ignore moral principles though I suppose.
Big enough to ignore moral principles though I suppose.
Musk is a businessman, not a charoty worker. Profits is all that matters in the end.
I'd personally rather they not be doing any business with that tyrannical dictatorship at all tbh.
You're probably touching several things right now that are made in China.
Musk is a businessman, not a charoty worker. Profits is all that matters in the end.
I agree with you, but he's an exceptionally forward-looking businessman who is clearly willing to lose billions in the hopes he advances something to the point where it'll make him those dollars back eventually. Worked for Tesla, and SpaceX should be taking extremely lucrative contract work in the next decade, should it survive that long. (I don't see why not.)
Yes I'm sure Tesla's stellar QC record will be much improved by stamping MADE IN CHINA on the mismatched panels
equalizing tarrifs on chinese cars would actually be appropriate, but I doubt we will see THAT much like how his rhetoric on Jhina fell apart once he moved into the WH
Yes I'm sure Tesla's stellar QC record will be much improved by stamping MADE IN CHINA on the mismatched panels
Chinese factory probably wouldn't ship cars outside of China. Considering the Chinese government is pushing hard for EVs and it's one of the largest markets for vehicles in the world it would be dumb not to be in it. It's a massive market, with Tesla's products having the potential to receive massive incentives from the government. If Tesla didn't enter the market it's shareholders would be crying foul.
Tesla's already said that a Chinese factory would be for the Asia market only.
Can't wait to see how the working conditions of a Chinese Tesla factory are
Imagine if the quality and working conditions actually improve.

Huh, wonder if Easy D will bite. This is pretty much word for word what he's constantly complaining about, something something 'unfair for US'
