Warren Spector: I've been pretty consistent in my belief that VR is a fad. I think it'll generate some interest among the hardcore gamers. And I see amazing possibilities in VR for social media and virtual meetings and training and crazy stuff like dealing with phobias. But for entertainment? I'm just not seeing it. I don't think most humans want to look stupid (everyone looks stupid in a VR headset) and they don't want to isolate themselves from the world. I mean, if someone's sneaking up behind me with a baseball bat, I want to know about it, you know what I mean? And let's not talk about nausea.
It's weird, I worked on a couple of games that supported available VR headsets back in the '90s and I was really jazzed about it. Now, I'm kind of over it.
AR, on the other hand - that seems pretty exciting. There's some potential there. Even the low-hanging fruit of AR gaming seems compelling. Bring on the AR.
I feel exactly the opposite way. VR seems like the future and AR seems like a dumb gimmick, but that's just me
I look forward to our bold new virtual reality future.

Honestly, I suspect that VR will end up like joysticks - indispensable for some genres, but otherwise kind of a luxury that most people don't really keep about.
(This coming from a lady wanting to get her copy of Freespace 2 working again and get the joystick out again)

I can definitely see it being like that, which is fine too. unlike a joystick however, you might get a VR headset to play one game and then find that it enhances the experience in many games (which aren't just flight or space sims)

Maybe, but I suspect 3d tech for conventional monitors will be more successful. Less of a bitch to code than VR, and a set of 3d glasses are cheaper than a rift.
I've got a dk2. It is amazing, and I think vr is going to change the world.

How is this not a gimmick?
How is this not a gimmick?
Yeah seriously AR seems pretty useless for gaming.
I'm getting the feeling he just likes the word "augmented"
warren spector hasn't made a good game in 12 years
I've got a dk2. It is amazing, and I think vr is going to change the world.
It's incredible how good enough the DK2 already is. Can't wait for the consumer version.
It looks more practical, is lighter and overall better. In comparison to the DK2, i'd say it's perfect.
Do people not understand that VR isn't a fad? it's an extension of immersion? It's an extension of the gaming experience?
it's such a dumb thing to say. We've been struggling to get true VR for decades now and now we FINALLY HAVE IT. We have Valve, Facebook, Sony, Microsoft all backing this technology up with huge dosh.
Fuck, even Star Trek: The original series, a show made in the 60's, had it's own imagination of a VR experience.
VR is here to stay.
It's weird, I worked on a couple of games that supported available VR headsets back in the '90s and I was really jazzed about it. Now, I'm kind of over it.
That's probably because the VR headsets in the 90's were shit. They weren't actually VR headsets.
Our phones alone are a thousands of times over more powerful than the best gaming machine using the best cards out there in 199x. Our phones alone could play games far more advanced than anything the 90's had. And that's just our phones. The shit even low end gaming pc's from 2010 can do, aren't even slightly comparable.
VR is going to be amazing in some games (single player first person games, vehicle simulation games, horror games, etc) and gimmicky or useless in others (third person, platformers, real time strategies, etc.)
I think it's finally going to gain ground just gauging by how much everyone wants one and the current reviews. I already know that all I want for Christmas this year is saving up for and/or getting a Vive or OR-Consumer version.
And most of that is just to play shit like War Thunder, Doom, and STALKER (if it ever supports it) in. Along with maybe a horror game or two. I also really want to show off the tech to my parents and my grandfather before he passes away - my mom was floored just by how well the 3DS handles looking around in respect to how you hold the console in Majora's Mask, it's like looking through a 3D Window Pane and cool as shit.
I'm sceptical of VR because everyone who supports it acts like mental cultists. "It's the wave of the future!" "It'll change gaming forever." "It'll change the world!" It's not even out yet, most of you have never even used a VR headset. Have some scepticism it's good for you.
I've not really caught the VR hype train; but I'm not going to make my mind up either way until I can experience it.
EDIT 1: What I will say is that I've noticed all across the internet is gamers acting with hostility whenever someone criticizes the technology. Sometimes I see valid feedback defending VR, but a lot of time it's just people going, "NAH! THIS IS THE FUTURE OF GAMING!!!"
I'm in the middle somewhere. I bet some games will really be amazing in VR, but I can't see myself using VR every time I want to enjoy a gaming session.

most of the VR cultists I know have used a VR headset
myself included
it's gonna be crazy
I had a dk1, sold it to save for CV. It's amazing, and revolutionary. I hate people who say they hate vr and haven't tried the rift. It really is something you have to experience
Half-Life 3 with heavy VR support would probably be enough to make VR viable.
i'll buy a VR set once someone makes steel battalion-style mech game utilizing it
old developer stuck in his ways

I have used it and it's a game changer
I have used it and it's a game changer
I threw up when I used it.
VR isnt a fad, its just nothing major yet because theirs almost nothing major done by any devs yet and the good shit isnt even retail yet.
All we have really are tech demos, even the VR games calling themselves full games are honestly just tech demos. Devs need time to figure this shit out, and VR is gonna be pretty stale for the first few years, it will be largely used and bought by a niche audience BUT I think its popularity will be mainstream.
If VR was a fad I highly doubt so many major companies would be putting a focus on it, some even making their OWN VR already to compete. I mean Valve seems to be taking it very seriously, Sony, and Microsoft. It wouldnt have this mass backing. Let alone ALL THE DEVELOPERS who have given support and even developing for VR right now.
VR is truly the next step in gaming and it has been since science fiction. It wont be some mainstream thing I think until another 5+ years, but it certainly isnt some fad thats gonna come and go.
His line saying "People dont wanna look stupid when being entertained"
The number of Wii sales and wii sports begs to differ.
I threw up when I used it.
So did Garry. Now he has a VR room.
I haven't actually tried using VR, but tbh I can't really see it being that great.
I mean, It's literally just a fancy monitor, It's not especially game changing. I think It'd only really be worth using for slow, atmospheric first person games, which rules out pretty much everything other than a handful of horror games, which I don't personally give a shit about.
I think one of the bigger hurdles of VR usability would be solved by a solid VR-compatible OS.
With a 4-8k Oculus Rift dealio (to combat the screendoor), you could have more usable screenspace than any multi-monitor setup.
I honestly think it might as well be, I won't decide based on opinions of others until I get to try it, though.

You obviously haven't used it because it adds way more than a monitor in your face.
I guess we'll see in a few years, but I agree with warren.
