• Playing the trumpet.

I've been thinking about starting to play the trumpet. Now I have little to none experience with music, I can't even read notes. So I was wondering is it a hard instrument to learn to play? Also, I have the time.
Moving to the Music forum.
Alright
Instruments like the trumpet or trombone really aren't hard to learn. If you can have a little mentoring and learning material picking it up is a sync. But it does take dedication. Keep at it bro. Once you learn one instrument, you learn them all.
Not too hard to start out, but playing for long times at a go can take some practice. Very enjoyable once you get in to it though. Plus, music is a lot easier to read than it seems.
I play trumpet, picked it up fairly easily. I recommend it.
^ I have to agree, I played trumpet for eight years, four in the marching band. It is fairly easy to pick up and reading music isn't that hard to learn.
Also played for eight years or so, though I haven't touched it in the past three due to lack of interest. It's fairly easy to learn, but difficult to master. You'll need some quality tongue control, though everything involved can be taught. Proper breathing is also a precise science, so if you're willing to really practice, it's quite enjoyable. I was always a fan of classic concert music rather than marching, but some people equally enjoy both. A lot of people here are showing you end results of years and years of practice and patience. Trumpet may be easy to learn, but it is very difficult to master. Any instrument is when you think about it, but with the large population of trumpet players, even decent players look mediocre sometimes. It can takes years to get a truly good sound with proper air support and articulations. For instance, I have been playing tuba for almost year, but my articulations are STILL garbage and I still have support problems. I still get a pretty good sound, but it's not superb and not where it could/should be. Most trumpet players will probably try to argue with this post (it is in their nature to argue about their skill. You think I am joking, but there are tons of jokes about it). I would recommend you try baritone/euphonium. I would say tuba, but that is getting pretty cliche now since I recommend it to everyone. [editline]04:59PM[/editline] Another big thing I recommend is to join your schools band concert and marching band. Playing alone is just plain boring, especially for us teenagers. We like to socialize and play together. Just go talk to your band director, chances are if they are cool, they will have no problem fitting you in the band. Now, he may recommend a different instrument than you chose to play. This may sound outrageous or disappointing, but you should probably pick up what they recommend. The fun thing about brass instruments is that they all use the same principle to make noise. This means I could use what I know about tuba and use that to play the trumpet. It would take me months to make the proper adjustments, but I would still have a fundamental foundation and the knowledge to help me improve. In all honestly, pick up any brass instrument. Brass instrumentation is a dying skill, we need as many players as we can get.
I already play bass guitar, and I can "play" trumpet. The reason I put it in quotes is because I can't honestly say I can play trumpet. I only know a few of the notes, but I have a reasonably good tone from what actual trumpet players tell me. I just sit there and try and figure out some stuff by ear. I wanna learn how to play trumpet for real, but I just neverr put the time into it.
I would want to learn the trumpet because it has a nice punch to its tone.
Well here's a somewhat related video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP9OZ7eby3E That's me at the beginning sight reading some music.
You should probably listen to solos from most brass instruments. Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba. You never know what you will hear and what else will interest you. It is very important going into brass instruments knowing what you wanna play. It sucks having to switch after a few months of progress and starting over. I'll post one of my favorite tuba solos. (Though most of the solo is played in a flugelhorn, it can be played on a trumpet.) i played back in 5th grade. it was ok

Any instrument is hard. Some are harder in different aspects.
You have great tone!
That's 6 and a half years of tone!
That's 6 and a half years of tone!
You're in need of an upgrade. I used a Getzen for the majority of my playing years. Expensive, but you will immediately notice a sound difference. Getzen 700 Series

It's totally worth playing an instrument when you get into a kickass marching band like this. [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHX6cUrXv-s&fmt=22[/hd]
I'll stick to my jazz tyvm
Everyone has their own thing. I enjoy the marching environment so much. The energy is amazing, there is so much fun to be had.
I was actually looking at getting a Bach Stradivarius for Christmas.
Bach is a fantastic choice as well.
I'm thinking of buying a trumpet and learning to play it. I'm thinking of getting an old, Old's Ambassador. Supposed to be one of the best student horns that used to be made. They can be found pretty cheap in fair condition.

So I was wondering is it a hard instrument to learn to play? Also, I have the time.
Compared to guitar or similar instruments. it's harder to start playing, because you can know the all of the notes, and it can still sound like complete crap because of how you are breathing into it. I haven't played in several years, so I got it out and tried to play, and found that even though I still remembered how to play all the notes, it sounded horrible.
I picked up trumpet SO MUCH EASIER than guitar. I still suck at guitar. Wtf am I doin' wrong
Certain things come more naturally to us. Though this is entirely an opinion, I find tuba mouthpieces feel more natural since they're bigger. I find it crazy hard to play on such a small mouthpiece like a French horn mouthpiece or Trumpet.
If your playing for long periods of time, prepare to feel light headed am i right?
If your playing for long periods of time, prepare to feel light headed am i right?
More like prepare to not be able to move your lips
Play trombone instead because everyone plays trumpet and it's high-pitched and obnoxious.
