Russia would consider asylum for U.S. cyber leaker
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia would consider granting asylum to the American who has exposed top-secret U.S. surveillance programs, if he were to ask for it, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said on Tuesday.
Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stopped short of saying Moscow would accept Edward Snowden, but pro-Kremlin lawmakers spoke out in favor of the idea, tapping into a lingering Cold War rivalry with the United States and a vein of anti-American sentiment Putin has often encouraged.
"Promising Snowden asylum, Moscow takes upon itself the defense of people persecuted for political reasons," Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the international affairs committee in the lower house of parliament, said on Twitter.
"There will be hysteria in the United States. They recognize this as their right alone," he said.
Putin and other Russian officials have often accused the United States of hypocrisy, saying it tries to impose standards of human rights, freedom and democracy on other nations while falling far short of them itself.
"This is an ideological catastrophe for the United States," Pushkov said, referring to Snowden's leaks about National Security Agency surveillance programs.
Its kind of a shame that someone from the "Land of the Free" is having to seek political asylum in another nation.
Yeah but the "land of the free" is obviously just a marketing term.
Putin will probably be interested in him because he'll see if he was able to get anything else that was made Top Secret from the US
sometimes I feel like the cold war is still happening between Russia and the US despite the collapse of the USSR

I feel its less, "I want to kill you," and more, "My dick is bigger," now-a-days.

That's all anything is nowadays, it seems.
All this is really contradicting. He broke the law by exposing the government for breaking the law.
I have to wonder why Russia wasn't the first choice to flee to. Now that he's given away his identity, how is he even going to get there, if he so chooses to?

Military dictatorship would be more fitting description, actually.

Hell, one would be hard-pressed to find any government who really truly cares about such things on moral grounds rather than for political or other gain.
Russia you such a rebel.

Fleeing to Russia to escape persecution of a government that wants to be totalitarian in the nature of knowing people's lives is a bad idea. Russia is just as corrupt as whats going on right now.

He broke US law and leaked government files. Is what he leaked justified and is he in the right? Of course he is, but no one in the US ever said that stuff like this goes by.

I don't think you realize what a military dictatorship is.
Unfortunately Russia and its government are far worse in many respects

Russia has its problems and Putin is a shady motherfucker but he is entirely correct in this accusation.

Yup. Putin is slightly better, he falls short on imposing humans rights and democracy but doesn't claim to stand by them either.

Let's play "find the guy who has no clue what he's talking about".
I'm sorry I haven't seen an APC driving down my street nor have the secret police come to take me away for saying mean things about them on the internet.

The Cold War is over. Politics is still on-going.
