More than 100 people are known to have died in a powerful earthquake that struck Nepal, wrecking many historic buildings, officials have said.
The quake measured 7.9 and struck an area between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara, the US Geological Survey said.
Tremors were felt across the region, as far afield as Pakistan, Bangladesh and neighbouring India.
Hope everyone is safe...
It's caused a major avalanche on Everest too. A lot of the camps felt the quake first, so a lot of climbers might have got to relative safety, but at the current time there's 8 confirmed deaths from the avalanche, in addition to the few hundred deaths in Nepal from the quake itself.
Death toll exceeds 1,000
More than 1,000 people have been reported dead after a huge 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal
The country’s deputy prime minister, Bamdev Gautam, has declared a state of emergency and appealed for humanitarian assistance across the region.
18 climbers were found dead on Mount Everest after the tremor triggered an avalanche. Many more are trapped.
The total death toll has risen quickly throughout the day, and is now thought to include at least 634 in the Kathmandu Valley and 300 more in the capital.
36 people have also been reported dead India, 12 in China, four in Bangladesh and six in Tibet.
The quake caused dozens of buildings in Kathmandu to collapse, including the historic Dharahara Tower.
The city’s main hospital is overwhelmed by casualties and residents are facing a night on the streets with nowhere to go.
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has ordered an immediate dispatch of relief and medical teams to Nepal, and the evacuation of Indian tourists.
UK foreign secretary Philip Hammond said the government was in close contact with Nepal, and the British Embassy is offering assistance to the authorities and British Nationals in the country.
I'm surprised no one here really cares about this. I don't think anyone really knows how bad it is.
I got a facebook notification saying one of my friends there was safe, I didn't even know that was a feature but I'm glad they are anyhow - that's really scary.
Death toll is now over 1000.
The death toll is clearly a lot higher than 1,000
Holy shit
Google engineer Dan Fredinburg died as a result of the avalanche on Everest

This hits pretty close to home for me, I visited a lot of the areas affected by the quake, both the tourist destinations and the poorer villages and towns. Such a beautiful country, I hope the wonderful people I met there are all safe.

There is no god.
I'm surprised this affected so many places, I hope everyone's safe, and thank god India is helping.
New estimates put the death toll at around 4500
Jesus Christ
I'd heard about this but hadn't really grasped how bad this was. Good thing India is offering assistance. China might wanna help to curry some goodwill and outpush india, so i wouldn't be surprised if China gets their fun earthquake support squads and sends them to Nepal. They've got a lot of recent experience since that really shit Earthquake which killed like 70 thousand people.
My dad was around this area when the quake hit, hope he's okay.

Okay don't mean to be this guy but close your eyes and just listen to that video after he tells him to come under his jacket.
Would not want somebody hearing this from outside of my room oh god.
That would be scary as fuck though. It's too bad they couldn't find better cover then the tent.

I think the asshole lucifer is the guy to blame
There's a couple of canadian tourists there and the canadian government doesn't give a shit about them, one of the minister pretty much said that it's free for all when these situations happen...
So this is what I keep hearing about in Nepal. I heard something about an earthquake but didn't think much of it at all. Saw a Facebook thing asking me to donate. Thought it was weird and wasn't sure what made this earthquake more significant than any other, but I guess now I know. Shit. My condolences to those who have lost loved ones in this.
Force of nature always amazes me.
Goes to show how tough we are towards each other, however if nature decides to wipe us out - it will do so with very little effort.
