This guard deserves all the shit he gets. His entire duty is to be aware of possible threats to the safety of the students and protect them from any imminent threats. He failed at both, by not filing legitimate reports on Nikolas and by not eliminating the threat, OR EVEN TRYING TO that the students faced. His life is not worth more than their's. If he is not willing to do either parts of the job he signed up for he should NOT be a school guard.

No one should be required to do their job! Don't want to risk your life? Don't be an armed guard.

The school and to an extent the students depended on the guard to save them in a violent situation, he failed to do that and left them to the mercy of a shooter.
