WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Six teenagers from a Burundi robotics team have been reported missing after an international competition in Washington and two of them were seen entering Canada, police said on Thursday.
Two of the Burundians - Audrey Mwamikazi, 17, and 16-year-old Don Ingabire - were spotted crossing the United States border into Canada, District of Columbia police spokeswoman Margarita Mikhaylova said.
"We don't have any indication of foul play and we're continuing to investigate this case," she said. Police said they did not have information about how they were spotted or the nature of the border crossing.
Teams of teenage students from more than 150 countries took part in the competition, which was designed to encourage careers in math and technology. An all-girl squad from Afghanistan drew worldwide media attention when President Donald Trump intervened after they were denied U.S. visas.

i wish everyone would collectively agree to refer to it as D.C. and not Washington

I agree. When someone says they are from Washington I don't know whether to say "Cool" or "Oh dear I'm so sorry"
As a Canadian who does not mind refugees and immigration from troubled portions of the planet I do not approve of people who jump the fucking border, from the United States of all places, to seek shelter in Canada.
Likewise while I hope they are found and promptly deported I hope they are at least given the information necessary for them to legally and rightfully immigrate so they can try doing this properly.
A quick and cursory glance at Burundi's page on Wikipedia shows that it's a fairly poor African country with a very, very low happiness index and a lot of issues stemming from overpopulation and deforestation to name a few.
Given that these teens are obviously intelligent (since they came to the States for an international robotics competition), my guess would be that they really don't want to go back to Burundi and would rather stay in the West. Now, while hopping the border isn't right necessarily, I do hope that they can come and live/work/get an education in the States or Canada and hopefully lead happy, productive lives.
EDIT: while I'm not sure exactly what the situation is there, the page linked above also does mention that there is currently violent unrest in the country, which I could imagine the teens might try and apply for refugee status as a result of- should they be found, of course, and not immediately deported.

USCIS Can grant Asylum/refugee status for temporary Visa holders if they meet strict criteria and after reading the kind of stuff going on there in the past few decades they might have had a shot at getting it, but after pulling this I imagine USCIS will be a lot less sympathetic to a Asylum plea. Dunno about Canadian immigration, maybe they'll get a hookup who knows.

This is something that is annoying as fuck because all airlines refer to DC airports as Washington. So when returning home from Japan after 7 years my itinerary has me flying into 'Dulles International, Washington' and I'm like "Cool, never heard of that Airport before, it'll be an adventure" It took me 10 hours into my flight when i checked the onboard map to realize "Man, I don't think my plane is flying into Washington state." :v:
Where does it say they entered Canada illegally?

From how it sounds this was probably their only opportunity to ever leave the country and more or less escape. I'm not sure if you really understand that they probably don't have the privilege of doing all the perfect Canadian paperwork lol
pretty common for these sort of international events, same thing happens at the olympics and world titleships for various sports
I don't know what kind of situation they're coming from, but if they need sanctuary then I sincerely hope that they get it, and that they can begin the proper immigration process once they are safe. It's hardly as if these girls are a burden. They're obviously quite intelligent and capable given the nature of their visit. They could be a real asset if living a country that actually values those traits, and being raised in an environment that allows them to learn and grow.

In all seriousness, though - doing things like this is likely going to make it harder for other talented people to come through legitimate means. Hell, this happening now gives legitimacy to the State Department being so hesitant to give visas to kids. I applied for my first US visa as an Indian at the age of 17 and I was really grilled for 45 minutes. Hell, even when I went to get a new one last year, I was literally watching rows and rows of Immigration Officers ask many, many questions to students planning to study in America, even subtly doubling back to see if they respond the same way twice. Even then I saw kids getting their visas rejected, despite the Uni giving them the necessary forms and everything.
It's not like there's going to be a ton of people that are going to fly in from Burundi seeing this and try to get in, but at the same time - this happening isn't the best either.
Sorry, we're getting more than enough asylum seekers hoping the American border. Deport their asses, they have no right to illegally come to Canada and get citizenship and a job given to them on a silver platter.

I mean yeah they're smart so they might actually contribute something to this country, but they still have no right to be here if they came in illegally to be honest.
In the same breath, you accuse them of having "jobs given to them on a silver platter" while simultaneously admitting that they are intelligent and could make positive contributions to society. Which is it? Are they lazy leeches come to steal your jobs, or some gifted teens who your country could benefit having?

Something tells me if they get given jobs, being an immigrant has nothing to do with it. I dunno, maybe being intelligent and working on high technology might be a reason? They took ur jerbs, or economic stimulus. Pick one, you can't have both. The only way they could be taking your jobs from you is if they, being from a less privileged position, are more productive and intelligent than yourself.
As for the girls, entering illegally probably wasn't the best idea but I genuinely hope whoever finds them first, listens. Lets just hope our orange turdnugget doesn't take this as a challenge to his divine authority and use it as a reason for turning the US border into a literal firewall

Imagine actually thinking this way, to send back people to a country where they could potentially die, instead of you and your country directly benefiting from their contributions. No compassion or reasoning.

Does Burundi need more brain drain?
Does Burundi need more brain drain?
Who cares? Burundi's a shitty country anyway, so just let them move to a first world country where they can actually do something useful with their lives.

feels before reals
utilitarian approach must be taken, as this action of illegal immigration is queue jumping, where people in the same predicament get fucked over for doing it right and having to do it legally.
During refugee status approval they are scanning their circumstances for whether or not they should be granted refugee status. More extreme their circumstance, the more likely they are to be accepted or given to another country for help. Mamy of which do not like this because they're economic refugees and wish to move to a wealthier and more giving nation. I don't blame them for thinking that, but it is not legal and is not how it should be done.
