It was disappointing that all they did was walk around the hallway with it. Was hoping they'd do stuff outside with it and play with the distortion which is much of the fun.

I do like that they got it for practicality in shooting VR-capable footage, taking into consideration spherical projection and such

Well, fun fact is, your eyes pretty much have a 180-degree view radius. Put your arms completely wide, straight to your sides. Look straight forward and move your fingers. You'll probably see them.
