Stuart, best known to audiences as Old Rose in the smash-hit 'Titanic,' was diagnosed with lung cancer several years ago, according to her daughter Sylvia Thompson. The actress began her career in the 1930s, starring in such films as 'The Invisible Man,' 'Roman Scandals' and 'The Prisoner of Shark Island.' 'Titanic' earned Gloria her first and only Oscar nomination. She lost to 'L.A. Confidential' star Kim Basinger at the 1998 ceremony. Eighty-seven when the Academy nominated her for her work as the 100-year-old survivor of the sinking ship in the James Cameron film, Stuart held the distinction of being the oldest Oscar-nominee in history. Born in Santa Monica, California, Gloria attended the University of California at Berkeley and was married twice. Her first marriage to Blair Gordon Neill lasted from 1930 to 1934. Later in 1934, she married Arthur Sheekman and the two had one daughter. The pair were together until his death in 1978.
RIP Gloria Stuart! :frown: RIP.
D'awww :(
I was wondering recently if she was still alive.
Such a great actor.
Man :( She was always the icebreaker at parties
Holy fuck. I was just thinking about her earlier today.
Man :( She was always the icebreaker at parties
grabbing at straws here
grabbing at straws here
I totally agree. It also bergs the question of how can you make a pun at someone's death? That's just indecent.
how can you make a pun at someone's death? That's just indecent.
Welcome to Facepunch, and with that attitude I'm afraid I'm going to have to direct you to the door. Facepunch only shows empathy towards animals, and even then in moderation.

Yet her heart will go on.
D'aww I just watched this film for the first time in ages last night :frown:
NO! Oh man, she was great in Titanic!
At least she can return to the Titanic now.
I want to watch Titanic again now.
Aw...I just recently got back into Titanic too. I believe I shall watch the film on behalf of her.
i never want to get elderly for so many reasons -you probably won't make it to 100 years, which is disappointing -you lose a good majority of your capabilities by then -your face becomes a leather sack -people treat you like a baby -it's better to be remembered at your prime

Don't worry. I believe that her heart will go on.

P A T H E T I C. guys who want out early because they can't handle it shouldn't have had this life from the beginning. Imagine how much someone else could get out of being you, just imagine and be ashamed. Suicide is fucking pathetic. The talk about dying young and in your prime is egoistical and cowardly. If it's not unfair to your family and friends, then it's directly cruel when considering the egg that was released but a month before or after you could live to 120, cure cancer and return sanity to this world. just imagine. Hmm. Just raising a finger... be sensible eh?
Nice round number.
For most people being old is as good as being dead; chances are I'm gonna be put in one of those retirement homes when I'm old :(

No disrespect to her she is a great actress, but to me it seems like she only got the nomination because of her age.
I thought she was dead already! Damn, 100 years old. Though I can't imagine being happy having to live another 30 years after your significant other died.
