HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston mother is facing charges after she allegedly went out on a date, leaving five children under the age of nine home alone.
Dora Rodriguez, 24, faces a felony charge of abandoning a child after an incident on July 10. According to court documents, Rodriguez allegedly left her five children, ages 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9 home alone from 9:00pm until 2:00am.
The older children told police their mother was "all dressed up" and went out with her boyfriend. They said that their mother told them to "take care of the babies" and that her boyfriend would pay them for babysitting when they returned.
A concerned neighbor became aware the children had no adult supervision, and contacted another family member. Court documents state that they contacted Rodriguez and urged her to come home, but she did not.
Initially, Rodriguez allegedly told police she left the children with a neighbor while she went out to get pain medication for a friend. But after police interviewed the neighbor who refuted that story, Rodriguez reportedly confessed to leaving the children alone.
Bond has been set at $2,000 in the case.[/release]
Fucking bitch. The LAST THING she needs is more dick... she's 24 and already has 5 children!
She could have just called the neighbors
She could have just called the neighbors
Thing is, that's what normal, caring people would do... not this broad.
That's not how she rolls, obviously.
We have a saying around here for stuff like this... "A male pube pulls stronger than oxen"
This sounds like my mother, except she makes me watch them.

Yes but are you under the age of 9?
Yes but are you under the age of 9?
this is facepunch
this is facepunch
Wow ok
How irresponsible!
You could have at least waited until 12
What are you guys freaking out over, this isn't even that bad. I used to stay home alone all the time when I was 6. This had kids that were 8 and 9 supervising. It's not like anything bad even happened, just some neighbors who were being really nosy found out about it. Yes, she should have hired a babysitter. I mean I don't support leaving kids alone at home, but you guys are acting like she needs to get tons of years in jail. Which she doesn't, because this is hardly a crime.
And you automatically assume that the kids would have lit the house on fire or something. She went on a date, meaning it was likely rather late. From this we can assert that the babies aged 1 and 2 were probably sleeping, the one aged 4 probably dozed off, and the ones aged 8 and 9 were playing videogames.
Plus I think you guys give kids a lot less credit than they deserve. You guys seem to see them the way the law sees them - that until they turn 18, they are blatantly retarded. Which not all of them are. I have a sister who is 9 years old, and I know I can trust her to stay at home alone without doing anything stupid. So why don't you trust these kids? Is it because they're in a group? Groups of kids hanging around places might do stupid shit, but this is a family we're talking about. There's no peer pressure inside a family.

Actually, the article states it was from 9:00PM to 2AM, yeah, I'm pretty certain 3/5 of them were asleep. It's not like the kids even did anything. They were probably sitting at home, minding their own business, when some nosy neighbor finds out and calls the cops.
It was 9PM, the kids should have been asleep.
I find nothing wrong with her actions, she's getting pinned on the 'what if' scenario that something would happen to her children. I'm sure a 9 year old understands that if there is a SERIOUS problem at 9 PM - 2 AM to call her immediately. I wouldn't even call her a bad parent.
sorry, but

this is true though, by 9 pm most kids that old are put to bed, and she wasn't gone too long anyhow
Well it's not a bad day for parenting to be honest.

What? I thought I was posting on SA all the time, fuck, they screwed me over!

im not giving you back your $10 btw
she got pregnant at fifteen?
wow
Wow what a stupid fucking thing to write an article about.
OP you're acting like she's a fucking monster.
I used to be home on my own when I was 9...
24 and 5 kids already? And one of them is 9?
You'd guess that having a kid at the age of 15 would stop you from having any more what with the problems teen pregnancy brings.
I stayed at the house when I was eight because my mom used to work overnight. I went to sleep regularly at 9pm, not all children are three months old and unable to take care of themselves OP.

whoa calm your opinions dude, compared to the other "horrible parenting stories of the day" you've posted, this is pretty tame.
Slow news day I guess.
As irresponsible as this is, I think it's blown way out of proportion. I mean, when I was nine, staying home alone was no big deal. It's not like they're all infants.
Sure, she should have called a babysitter or something, but this is by no means newsworthy.

Yes, I agree.
However I do believe kids should never be left unattended like that, it's a recipe for disaster.
Nothing "terrible" here, still shouldn't have done it but it happens all the time. It's like copying music onto CD's to use in the car...
my parents did this all the time
I don't see anything wrong with this. Deserves time off from parenting by letting the oldest watch the youngest.

She told a nine year old kid to take care of their four siblings. While that may be somewhat ok (I guess), when people warned her to go back, she still didn't go. Then, she lied about going to get pain meds.
