• What exactly IS 'Modern Death Metal'?

Okay, so, this is a question that's been nagging at the back of my brain for a while now. I've heard the term thrown around every now and again, and it's almost always used in an extremely negative and disdainful fashion, but I've never been able to get a solid definition on "Modern Death Metal", also sometimes referred to as simply "Modern Metal". From what I've been able to gather, some people use it interchangeably with Melodic Death Metal, yet others consider it explicitly different from melodeath; I've seen a few people who were avid fans of melodeath savagely rip apart "modern death". I'd like to say I have seen vice versa, but frankly, I haven't really seen anyone who enjoys Modern Death Metal. I've seen a lot of bands who have been considering themselves "Modern Death Metal" (they often throw the term "Progressive" in there, too, though most of them aren't, by definition, progressive, since, you know, they don't actually progress their music), or who are considered by others to be "Modern Death Metal". Some of which that come to mind are: Dark Age's 2009 release, Acedia D Creation's 2009 release, Silent Echoes myGRAIN's 2006 release, Orbit Dance Fragile Art's 2007 relase, Axiom I know there are about six other bands I've listened to (though I don't have any of their albums since I didn't much care for them) that I've seen shamelessly slandered as "modern death metal". The only similarities I can see that these bands share that most other melodeath band's don't (I consider all of these melodeath) is that they seem to have a crisper production, they generally use keyboards and synths more abundantly than many melodeath bands, and they seem to have extremely melodic clean vocals, as opposed to moderately or average clean vocals used by many melodeath bands. Is that the basic definition of Modern Death Metal, then? Production, keyboards, and cleans? Or am I missing something here? I'm half believing right now that "Modern Death Metal" is just a psuedogenre, used more to attack the fact that "bands aren't as heavy as they used to be", but I want to be sure. :v: Thanks to anyone who can help me find a decisive answer. :buddy:
Absolute shit.
IMO it's just another way of saying melodic death metal. I've heard bands that call themselves modern death metal, but are same as bands who just call themselves melodic death metal. They're probably just saying it to sound new and edgy.
I thought it was just death metal that was fairly new.
Put a bunch of silverware in a blender and record it, scream some random words, and put it on youtube! Congratulations! You have successfully recorded and published your own Death Metal song! (In other words: It sucks)
Death metal that's been produced recently? It's a pretty pointless subgenre from what I can tell. Not all music within a subgenre has to sound exactly the same. Slayer and Metallica are both thrash metal but they are pretty different in their style of thrash. It doesn't warrant a 'Thrashy Thrash Metal' subgenre for Slayer.
It's not even a subgenre, just a label.
It's not even a subgenre, just a label.
That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. The way I've seen it used makes it somewhat hard to discern if they're just using it to label stuff they don't like (like "mallcore") or if they're actually using it to define a distinct genre. Thanks to everyone, apart from the close-minded who sheepishly think all metal is bland screaming.
I bet Racid is itching to post in here, since he's banned
I bet Racid is itching to post in here, since he's banned
Racid got banned again? It seems every third day he's banned. :v: And I bet you're right. I'm amusing myself just trying to formulate what his post would be like... :buddy:

Modern Death Metal is simply a term used to describe metal that has come out in mostly since 2000 and is not considered a member of the earlier movements in the history of death metal. It is not really a genre, just a label. And it doesn't really have much to do with melodic death metal necessarily. Some melodic death metal bands some aren't. It's mostly used as a derogatory term by some to designate bands that have come out recently that they don't like.
"all those bands you posted are total garbage and make you look gay. Here's some good modern metal..."
...core. IT IS ALWAYS METALCORE.
It's basically just people who can't stand that anyone likes anything different then them bashing and raging on everything. Men with PMS pretty much.
...core. IT IS ALWAYS METALCORE.
Not really, all genres fucking suck, there's only few bands that stand out. [editline]02:52PM[/editline]
"all those bands you posted are total garbage and make you look gay. Here's some good modern metal..."
Wrong, I would not say that, since there is no 'good modern metal'.

You're not telling me the only good metal is the metal from the 80's?
Of course their is good modern metal, silly. You're not telling me the only good metal is the metal from the 80's?
Agreed.
Of course their is good modern metal, silly. You're not telling me the only good metal is the metal from the 80's?
70's - 90s are golden for metal, there could be good modern metal bands, but if there is, there is a really small majority of bands
70's - 90s are golden for metal, there could be good modern metal bands, but if there is, there is a really small majority of bands
That's just an opinion. You like metal from 70's - 90's, I used too. Now I like modern metal.
That's just an opinion. You like metal from 70's - 90's, I used too. Now I like modern metal.
Ok, show me some modern metal then. Make sure it's not shitty.
Ok, show me some modern metal then. Make sure it's not shitty.
No. I have a truckload of bands from the 21st century and onwards who are brilliant, but you won't like them. It's just a matter of taste, and apparently you don't like modern metal, whatever I post you will claim is shit, because people have different tastes in music.

Wikipedia says this is Tech Death? I was under the impression that Quo Vadis etc was Technical Death Metal? Don't a lot of shitty metalcore and deathcore bands call themselves this?

You're not telling me the only good metal is the metal from the 80's?
Obviously you don't know Racid. Spend some time looking at all these metal threads. Guaranteed that if the band is before the early 90s, Racid will be posting saying they suck, and then suggest some 80s and 90s metal. [editline]11:49PM[/editline]
If you say so. -Deathcore samples- http://www.myspace.com/viraemiaaz http://www.myspace.com/closedfortonight That's just a little bit, most of it is Deathcore, but bleh. I warned you.
Bad move, buddy. Posting deathcore on this forum will get you ripped to shreds. Not to mention, and I'll be the first to admit I'm not a fan, at all, of Deathcore (personally I find it a disgrace to death metal on the whole [meaning there are exceptions, few as they may be]), as far as I know there is no truly "modern deathcore". There's only deathcore that was released in modern times with the traditional sound of deathcore. (Not to mention, isn't deathcore a modern genre anyways? It's too young to start diversifying into classic and modern, if memory serves me right)
