• Found some old religious stuff at a yardsale, and maybe a Knights Templar medal-thing?

My dad and I were driving around a neighborhood today looking for something to do, we usually go into yardsales when we can to see if we can find weird stuff. Today on one of our stops we came to a little old lady's garage sale. She had tons of old books and jewelry out, most of which was junk (nothing silver/gold). Eventually I got to talking with her and found out that her husband belonged to some secret society or something. (She called it his "Old boys club"). She said he never talked about it with her, even though they were married for over 65 years. After about 20 minutes I started to leave when she stopped me, waddled inside and came out with a small wood trinket box. She plopped it down (which made a cloud of dust billow up) and said "Here, you can take this. Frankie doesn't need these anymore." Inside were some scraps of paper, old rotisseries and stuff, I didn't take a good look at it. I didn't want to feel like I was taking advantage of her, so I gave her 4 bucks and walked off with a nice ceder box. When I got home I dug into it a little more, and I found this stuff and a silver ring (I forgot to take a picture of it, darn). I don't know much about religious things, though that big medal caught my eye. First of all, let's look at the silver stuff. The cross is marked "Inri" above Jesus's head, not sure what that means. The back is stamped "moneta d'argento" whatever that means. The pendant thing is small, but kinda heavy for it's size. Looks like it has Jesus holding a baby on one side with Mary on the other, with "Our Lady of Mt Carmel Pray for us" on the top. Next to it is stamped "Sterling", so it's Sterling silver (I assume) Now comes the bigone! It looks like it's some sort of copper, it has that greenish look that old copper had. I can't read what it says, it's all in Latin, though my dad pointed out that on one side, it looks like it has the Knights Templar cross on it Here's what the Knights Templar cross looks like The other side is pretty badly gunked up. That rust isn't from the medal itself (I can tell), but it's gotten wet for quiet some time
The medal is referring to St. Benedict
Watch out for Altairs and Ezios. Pretty cool stuff though.
The obverse inscription states :Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur! (May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death!) [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline] Here is the medal. http://www.osb.org/gen/medal.html [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline] Inri=Without Success moneta d'argento= Silver coin, or something like that
Ah, thank you
No problem, google did most of the work for me.
inri is pretty standard on crucifixes. [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline] the pendant with Jesus holding a baby, he's actually holding his tunic out of the way to reveal his sacred heart. [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline] the woman on the back of the pendant is the lady of Mt Carmel, she's a manifestation of Mary who some kids claimed to have seen on a hill or something [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline] the last medal I've never seen but it depicts St Benedict in his typical pose. My latin is a bit rusty but I'll try to work out what it says.
Inri=Without Success
I thought it meant "King of the Jews"?
Pax (above the cross) means Peace "May the holy cross be my light, may the demon never be my lead." around the back no idea what the letters on or around the cross means, that seems a bit cryptic
I thought it meant "King of the Jews"?
It means "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews". [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline]
Pax (above the cross) means Peace "May the holy cross be my light, may the demon never be my lead." around the back no idea what the letters on or around the cross means, that seems a bit cryptic
Wikipedia:
On the back is a cross, containing the letters C S S M L - N D S M D, initials of the words Crux sacra sit mihi lux! Non draco sit mihi dux! ("May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my overlord!").Surrounding the back of the medal are the letters V R S N S M V - S M Q L I V B, in reference to Vade retro satana: Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas! ("Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!") and finally, located at the top is the word PAX which means "peace".
He was a member of the Order of Saint Benedict. and all this translating has been done for me already http://www.osb.org/gen/medal.html Wish I had just searched benedict medal first
My Inri translation was wrong cause google translate didn't have the context.
It means "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews". [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline] Wikipedia:
I was close considering that was all a combination of context clues and remembering my high school latin class
The obverse inscription states :Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur! (May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death!)
That's pretty fucking badass.

the side of the coin that is gunked up is the the side of the coin that was exposed to the water and moisture around it through the clenched fingers of the knight who held onto it as he held onto his faith in the last moments of his life

They look quite old. Pretty neat. I have to wonder how much of a collectors value they have.

Yeah, I've seen that medallion before, it's a St. Benedict medallion. You're supposed to hold it and pray with it during times when you're feeling temptation to sin. My mom buys these things and gives them out as presents on Birthdays and stuff because she's religious like that.

It is the Emperor's Honor award! Return it to your local PDF Unit Lest you be executed for heresy!
It means you're an assassin. Jump off a roof into some hay. If you survive you are the chosen one.
This stuff might be valuable. You should get someone to check its value or something. Alternatively, you could do something cool with it. Like stamping it into something valuable to make it more valuable.

let me call in a buddy of mine, he's an expert in old religious stuff from yardsales That rust looks like it's made of a cheap metal, if you ask me, though. Still cool looking, I'd frame them or something
They're pretty estrange
they're pretty common
