Considering the high numbers of nasty creatures in that environment, training the men to be highly tolerant of pain is important. You can't have guys stepping on something sharp or getting bit by something and be completely crippled, they have to be able to tolerate the pain and keep being productive. That sure is some respect for other cultures you got there. You supposedly respect them but you still view their rituals in the context of your life. To a person living in modern society, that ritual would be stupid and pointless. It isn't to them, though.
