Hello, I've been looking around for a way to play movie files on a PS2, and I stumbled upon the freeware McBoot. I was wondering if anyone could give me a basic review on it, how well it works, what file types it works with, any risks that would be taken by using it, and any other general knowledge about the software. I don't necessarily need the ability to play pirated games as much as just a simpler way to watch movies somewhere a bit more quiet than the living room, so if anyone could tell me about the USB Media player that would be wonderful. Thank you in advance, and if this is the wrong board to ask these things, please let me know the appropriate place to ask.
the PS2 plays DVDs as far as I know, just burn them or something

It's what I've been doing, but my computer kind of blows and it takes me an hour to burn anything. That plus it can be a bit complicated sometimes, and I've been interrupted mid-burn to come back to find that my flatmate (or whatever you call the person you're splitting rent with) has canceled it. I mean I can keep this up, but if there's a quicker, easier way then I'd like to find it.
McBoot is incredible.
Getting it installed, though, is easier said than done.
However playing movie files via USB is not recommended, the PS2's USB is v1.1, not all that fast.
Does your PS2 have the network adapter on the back?

Yes it does. Why, can this be useful?
Also, for the record, I'm a bit wary about hardmodding my PS2 or doing anything that could potentiallu cause it to not work.

If you have the fat PS2 network adapter you just need a non-Western Digital IDE hard drive, you can find those for dirt cheap used. Then you just need to load all your games/movies/music into that using your computer (with an IDE adapter if you don't have an IDE connector on your motherboard), then stick that into your PS2 using the adapter and you're set, you can play all that media from there.

Oh? That sounds alot better, and in that case it would prolly mean I could have a bigger variety than if I were to use my 4GB flash drive. Is there anything else I need to know about it? Any third party software, or is it just as simple as plug and play?

Additionally this can allow you to play entire games off of the IDE drive, although the setup process is a tad more involved than if you were just playing movies.

And don't worry about hardmodding. McBoot is completely software based and the whole thing is located on the memorycard. To "disable" mcboot, just take out the card.

As far as watching videos, it can play .avi files that are encoded with DivX or XviD. There's no support for .mkv/H.264/x264.
