The mum and dad in Florida weren't home when their 11-year-old returned from school, according to Fox News. So he picked up his basketball and starting shooting hoops until they got back. A neighbour who saw him unattended allegedly called the police to raise her concerns and when the parents returned home, police were waiting to charge them with child negligence.

Following their arrest, they were held overnight in jail, and according to the mum, their sons - aged 11 and four - will be kept by authorities for a month before attending day camp and day care this summer. The parents are planning on pleading not guilty in criminal court soon, and until then are undergoing therapy and parenting classes, and their children are attending 'play' therapy.
Imagine being a child and being locked out of your home. No food, no water, no bathroom. What horrific parents. He could have starved and been mauled by suburban bears.
shit i was alone for hours at young ages, what the litteral fuck also faux news as a source? im not sure its exactly reliable
also faux news as a source? im not sure its exactly reliable
I agree, they actually made this whole story up to draw attention to Obama's police state.
neighbor's a fucking dick
should have given him a key just in case imo

I am everything wrong with society today.
Florida strikes again, having your child outdoors and developing his creativity is dangerous!
Florida strikes again, having your child outdoors and developing his creativity is dangerous!
to be fair being outdoors in florida is like a 50/50 chance of dying from heatstroke, alligators, or floridians
held for a month for this? yo what
I can see a law requiring children under 18 to be on a leash and have GPS chips implanted into their skin in the next few years at this rate. If it's illegal for children to be out of their parent's sight for longer than an hour, then I would've grown up in a foster home.
here's an idea neighbours: let the kids in for a while until the parents get home and knock off the neglect claims
shit i was alone for hours at young ages, what the litteral fuck also faux news as a source? im not sure its exactly reliable
The source mirror cites is even worse. And if your kid is coming home from school on his own he should have a way to get into the house if there's any chance you won't be there.
the kid has access to the back yard, presumably safe from most any dangers present, and he's 11. he had something to do, and the parents weren't away for long a month for that? hm. i would appreciate a source that isn't the mirror or fox news because i have a hard time believing any court would sentence this

Once Child Protective Services get involved it will go downhill real fucking quick for parents.
Man, have any of you ever been to Florida during the summer? Shit is unbelievably humid and hot. I woulda preferred death rather than sit out there for 90 minutes. But jokes aside, this is pretty dumb.

In America we are batshit crazy protective of children from imagined threats.
The parents are planning on pleading not guilty in criminal court soon, and until then are undergoing therapy and parenting classes, and their children are attending 'play' therapy.
Oh yeah the case hasn't happened yet, but here let us take away your children for a month, goto jail and attend these therapy and parenting classes. Apparently being taken away from your parents for more then a month is healthy environment for your childs to be in. What the fuck kind of reaction is that to your child being left alone for 90 minutes. He's 11 i am sure his parents just let him play outside and ask him to be back before dinner, but god forbid if he's alone for 90 whole minutes, that could be dangerous!
This is total BS and I don't see how anyone can feel morally responsible by convicting these two parents. Also why does the article use the term "mum." It makes the source look really unprofessional and annoying.
to be fair being outdoors in florida is like a 50/50 chance of dying from heatstroke, alligators, or floridians
not really, fuck i sat outside for like 3 hours a few times in the snow because i left my damn house key inside, not my parents fault i locked myself out of my house
to be fair being outdoors in florida is like a 50/50 chance of dying from heatstroke, alligators, or floridians
I lived in Florida for a few years and my parents would throw me outside after lunch and i wouldn't go back in until it got dark. Granted, i was a kid and fuckin' stoked to be wandering around outside, but being out for an hour and a half in your own backyard is nothing.

The kid's 11, he's not 7 or 8. When I was 11 I'd sometimes stay out of the house the entire afternoon. And not just in the fucking back yard either. I mean, what is this? Good lord. Between this and the lemonade stand shit, I'm getting more and more convinced that soon, childhood in the USA might not be a thing.
to be fair being outdoors in florida is like a 50/50 chance of dying from heatstroke, alligators, or floridians
Don't forget hurricanes and meth. I'm a Floridian, you can trust me. Also this is seriously the dumbest thing ever. When I was a kid I rode my bike four miles to and from school every day (by choice, I liked it) and when I got home I literally just ran in, said "Hi mom Hi dad I'm home" grabbed a snack and ran back outside until it was too dark to see anymore. We played with ANYTHING. Me and the other kids would spend hours hanging out in vacant lots in the neighborhood swinging from trees like retards, riding bikes, killing pike fish in the canals because fuck pike fish, and just wandering around.
Like I said a while ago, we've completely fucked up childhood. This is far from the only instance of this happening. Can't go in your own god damn back yard by yourself anymore apparently.

Who do we call to protect these kids and their parents from CPS and the concern-troll neighbour?
If I was that kid I'd do everything I could to ruin that neighbor's fucking life. God what a fucking twat.
I cannot believe this story... come on, this shit doesn't seriously happen does it. Jail time? Month long child removal?! I've seen cruel jokes before but this takes the fucking cake. I can only mirror what others said - I myself grew up wandering around doing whatever I pleased, walking the roads or exploring in the forest, hanging around the house sometimes when locked out... my mum worked two jobs and it was just me and her, but no one would be stupid enough to call the police, and the police here would certainly not be stupid enough to put my mum in JAIL for that!! Just... fucking wow. The kid was AT HOME, he wasn't sitting on some gutter somewhere crying and screaming for his parents. Perhaps this is just a sign of changing times, all of this ridiculous "Think of the children!" overbearing protectiveness and a desperation by law enforcement and government bodies and such to appeal to parents by appearing to be super productive in 'protecting' kids now. 'Protecting', huh.
If she was that concerned about the kid, why not invite the kind you her home and leave a note on the door.
If she was that concerned about the kid, why not invite the kind you her home and leave a note on the door.
It seems that the new way to approach problems is to complain and make someone else deal with things for you instead of, you know, putting any effort forward yourself. Nosiness and laziness are a toxic combination.
