Space 1999 is a Sci Fi TV Series that is know as the most expensive television series ever made up to that time, this was made by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, you probably remember them for their other TV Series: UFO, Stingray, Captian Scarlet, and more.
Space 1999 follows the crew of Moonbase Alpha, a Space Research Center obviously located on the moon, in their unguided trip through the galaxy after a massive nuclear explosion on the far side of the moon throws it out of earth's orbit and into deep space. It only ran for 2 seasons before falling to production costs. the idea is based on other TV Series like Lost in Space and Star Trek, though most of the visual athsetic is heavily based on 2001: A Space Oddysey.
The primary character is John Koenig (Played by Martin Landau), the commander of the moonbase, and usually carries a laser Stun-gun, the other being Helena Russel (Played by Barbara Bain), head of the medical section. Later introduced are Tony Verdeschi (played by Tony Anholt), the Second-in-command, main controller of the Command Center and head of security, and Maya (Played by Catherine Shell), a shape-shifting alien who joined the Alphans after her father attempted to capture them for research.
One familar piece from the TV Series is the Eagle Transport, a modular transport and combat ship, Moonbase Alpha has a entire fleet of them.

There was going to be a Season 3, but it was clear when nearing the conclusion of filming Season 2 that it wasnt going to happen, though there were plans, including the show this time running only 13 episodes a year and breaking out Maya for her own series.
Later there was a fan-film made called "Message from Moonbase Alpha" with the cooperation of the original Space: 1999 Script Writer and the reprisal of Zienia Merton as Sandra Benes as she attempts to send a final message to Earth while the rest of the base makes a massive exodus to a habitable planet, dubbed "Terra Alpha", and suceeds. later she starts recalling her life on Alpha while the Moon enters an unknown solar system. The fan-film did reuse about breif clips from 15 other episodes with copyright given. It is avaible in the Space 1999 Bonus Disk in the DVD sold in the US and Canada.
There was another attempt at another Moonbase Alpha film to revive the series, but it failed and nothing came of it.
Currently Retcon Studios is attempting to continue the series, the project dubbed "Space: 2099".

Intro to Space 1999 Season 2
So, what do you think?
My dad loves this series. He watched it when he was young.
I do not remember 1999 being this awesome
Oh man, watched reruns of this on Scifi back in the 90s late at night with my dad.
Nostalgia.
I remember watching these once a long time ago on DVD out of curiosity. I found them at the library... Don't remember too much about the show, though, and I don't think I got that far into it.
