EA might make a sequel to Plants Vs. Zombies the way only EA could do. (RUMOR)
This afternoon's great PopCap mystery may now be a little less mysterious:
a Canadian industry source with ties to Electronic Arts has told Kotaku
that a small team at EA's Burnaby campus is working on a new entry in the Plants vs Zombies franchise.
The thing is, it's not another tower defence game.
Apparently it's a multiplayer-oriented first-person shooter. For consoles. Seriously.
While that sounds crazy, remember, this afternoon's Superannuation story summed up the mystery
PopCap project as potentially a "cartoony, mechanically-novel and possibly multiplayer-oriented 3D action game for consoles".
Which certainly fits with what Kotaku has since been told: that the small team, comprised mostly of former members of
EA's Black Box studio (Skate, Need for Speed), is working on a Plants vs Zombies console title that's "in the vein of Team Fortress 2".
The project is still in its early stages; we're told it won't even be submitted for PopCap's final approval until later this month.
So as awesome/awful as the idea may sound to you, there's still a chance the game won't be green-lit.
Asked for confirmation on the rumour, a PopCap representative declined to comment on the story.
Take a tower defence game and turn it into a FPS, what could go wrong?
They should make the Sims into an competitive realistic multiplayer FPS. And, while they're at it, SimCity.
Sounds like a interesting concept. I personally found the first game boring as fuck.

That sounds like a horrible idea.

The game wasn't for you then. I really liked just playing through the game on my phone on the bus every morning, can get challenging.

Exactly, which is why I'm glad they're making it more appealing to me.
Exactly, which is why I'm glad they're making it more appealing to me.
but not every game has to appeal to every body
some people like FPSes, some people like RPGs, some people like tower defense games
they don't really need to switch genres
Exactly, which is why I'm glad they're making it more appealing to me.
While making it less appealing to the people who liked the first game aka me and millions others who just want a casual game to play on the bus. It's a silly move to take a brand completely away from its userbase like this.

Correct me if I'm wrong you still have the original game and this is just a rumor?

No joke I have played PvZ 4 times on 3 platforms, it's an incredible mix of casual and hardcore gameplay. I really doubt this rumour though.

Sounds even sillier to try to market it to an audience who only know it as a casual game.
And yeah, make it "in the vein" of TF2. That's never failed before, right?
Especially now that TF2 is free.
Can't have a PvsZ thread without some music!

I know it's just a rumour but can I not comment on the rumour as if it were true?
And there's nothing wrong with getting more content to the original game even if it's through a sequel. Sometimes more of the same is good.

Obviously Popcap disagrees with you severely then if this is true.

They mustn't be fans.

The fuck? is fps meant to mean first plant shooter?
You play the role of a peashooter and the only control you have is "shoot"
Actually if this was something like Sanctum it'd be neat.

Better idea, let players BUILD the cities that you're playing in, while you have other players in a Sims3 environment design them, then you play it from an fps perspective.
I imagine it'll be like Toy Soldiers, what with the normal PvZ gameplay with the ability to select a plant and control it in first-person gameplay.
Why do they keep ruining everything?
What? Are people actually falling for this? Now I know FP has an enormous raging EA hate boner, but you need to think rationally here, EA has made some bad decisions, but they wouldn't do something this silly and stupid.
I'd like a mode on the Sims 3 PC where you could use a controller and walk around like on the consoles. A first person view would be cool.

No.

Unlockable hats for each plants. Hell, they'll make it so you can customise the individual petals.
Have bioware create the sequel, with lots of plant on zombie romances
A rumour + Reported by Kotaku = Everyday occurrence, ignore
A rumour + Reported by Kotaku + EA = Time for some angry posting!
...So they're ditching their plans to resurrect Plants vs. Zombies vs. Space-aliens/Robots?
It is a sad day.
Make bejewled a fps
Oh boy, I wonder how wrong that can get. It's debateable to turn a dark RTS like Syndicate into an FPS but fucking Plants vs. Zombies? EA'd be better off going the Angry Birds road, merchandising the fuck out of it.
Either that's wild mad speculation or EA direly need to be institutionalized; how can that even work? I'd understand sequalizing it as a sort of third-person tower defense like Dungeon Defenders or Orcs Must Die, THAT would work and probably be fun if it were team-based with the Plants defending and the Zombies attacking, with asymmetrical gameplay making the different teams truly different. But as a multiplayer FPS, I really don't think EA's been taking its pills; unlike Valve who are kinda loony in the good not-so harmful sense that doesn't really need medication, EA is the bad kinda loony, the kind that warrants heavy medication before they destroy the future generations.
Also, even if the asymmetrical team-based Tower Defence vs Horde Assault version of that game were real, EA doesn't DESERVE money for it; they're already murdered too many studios and ruined franchises, so why do they still get even a single penny for their evil work?!
I demand that Peggle become a giant space opera RPG.
