BT is claiming to have made a "big breakthrough" with fibre broadband, which could see homes and businesses see speeds rise to 1Gbps (gigabit per second).
A trial of so-called G-Fast technology has managed download speeds of 800Mbps (megabits) and upload speeds of 200Mbps.
The trial is significant because it utilises existing technology.
BT has been criticised for its continued use of copper lines.
So-called Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC), which uses a combination of fibre and copper lines, is BT's preferred technology for broadband rollout.
It is significantly slower than Fibre to the Premises technology (FTTP) but is much cheaper to deploy.
FTTC also gets slower over distance because it relies on copper for the last part of the connection.
It means homes that are further away from BT's green street cabinets will have slower speeds.
BT claims that the new technology can achieve good speeds over longer lines of 66m (216ft), which it said encompasses 80% of connections.
G-Fast technology has been tested at BT's research laboratory at Adastral Park in Ipswich. It is due to open a new ultrafast broadband lab where it will continue to test its potential.
For only 399£/month.
I don't get how you can have such slow internet everywhere in the UK.
Thank you for the row of stock images, I needed a visual hook to read 10 sentences :v:
On topic, it'd be interesting to see what they have up their sleeve, but it still feels like a workaround for a problem that can already be solved with a sound investment in better hardware.
meanwhile in rural wales, it would be quicker to get someone to do a steam backup of a game that we both own, burn it, send it to me, and then I install the steam backup than to actually download it manually.
Fast people get faster, slower people still on ADSL get shafted. Ho hum.
nah I don't believe this. Don't see this happening without a catch

We don't have the infrastructure, alot of roads and they all need cables and green boxes.
I have virgin and live in a city so they'll throw upgrades at me it's great.
Idgaf about existing fibre lines, upgrade the slowest areas first.
We recently changed to Talktalk's fibre, and despite the first two days having a pretty solid speed of around 2-4mbs, it's suddenly decided to be worse than we had before we swapped.
The UK's infrastructure is all round shite.
800Mbps download speed, with a 35GB monthly bandwidth cap.
That's nothing, we get 1Gbps both up and down here! [sp]once again I'm in Japan[/sp]
Pfft, we get 1Gbps up AND down here! [sp]once again I'm in Japan[/sp]
Japan master race?
I pay out the ass for 70mbits down / 10 up
$120
Comcast
What are the average speeds over there?

Depends where you live. If you live in/near a modern city in a road with fibre, it's great. Everywhere else, though...

In my area, it's around 33mbps average, though we get 100mbps+ with Virgin Media
I had no idea VM were the top, I have had overall a good experience with them aside from a few months of slowness during some maintenance:

If these breakthroughs are ever deployed, it wouldn't be worth it.
It only ensures that the connection from your personal network to the internet service provider's network is that speed. So in all practicality, you'll never make use of these speeds. Even when you're the one leech, torrenting crap ton's of porn from thousands of seeders.

Good for running seedbots off though.

from one source yes. but factor in downloading many things

By around May 2015 my household will be on 120 down for the same price as 20 down.
Got tripled for free in 2012 I think, being doubled again next year.
I get 10 up and 2 down on BT infinity. So yeah, I call bullshit BT. Suck a dick.

it's happening
Theres only decent BT Infinity in a few areas currently.
i get 100 down and 5 up here, doubled twice in 1 year.
If these speeds came to America, it'd probably cost around $15,000 a month. Be glad that BT at least cares enough to fuck you in the ass over 800mb speeds instead of 650kb-10mb speeds with massive downtime for the same costs.

Fucking Comcast is one of two ISPs here and between the two of them you can either have one day of functional internet a month at maybe 10 down or a good few weeks of uninterrupted 5 down. Free market sure is great.

Charter is badass, i think they doubled the speed just to bitch slap AT&T (the only 2 isp's where i live) because the highest AT&T offers is 20 down and 0.75 up.
but yeah, ISP monopoly's are the worst for america

Charter was bought out by Comcast in my area. It's either Comcast or Century link. Or, shudder, Satellite internet.
i have
1.8mbps
fucking upgrade me to fibre already bt you fuCKING CUNTS
and yet BT still have tiny bandwidth caps.. So you will never be able to use that 1gb connection.
