Facebook has tried to ban it. Google has attempted to outsmart it. But no matter what these tech giants do, people’s use of software to block digital advertising — often the lifeblood of companies’ online business models — keeps gaining traction worldwide. In total, roughly 11 percent of internet users globally relied on ad blockers to avoid some form of digital advertising last year when surfing the web. That equates to more than 600 million devices, from smartphones to traditional computers. The figure represents a 30 percent annual increase, according to a new report published on Wednesday by PageFair, a start-up that helps companies recoup some of this lost advertising revenue, which now totals tens of billions of dollars each year.
I run it on pretty much everything, especially for security/data cap purposes. Though I do unblock certain news outlets and other websites I like, and I also try to pay for things at least occasionally e.g. youtube red, donations. I pretty much expect this to keep growing too. Ads are already pretty inherently immoral, and on the web they're done in a fucking horrible way with being so intrusive, along with bullshit like malvertising. source: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/31/technology/ad-blocking-internet.html?smid=re-share
As long as pop-up ads and ads with audio exist, websites can get fucked for all I care. If you keep a small ad banner at the top and another at the bottom then it's fine, but don't go overboard with that shit.
Someone has seen these numbers and thought "I better make ads MORE intrusive and annoying".
Ever since that report of banner ads that can infect your computer without even needing to be clicked on, Iv'e went full paranoid and just leave my adblock on for everything.
Huh, that's interesting. I wonder if some of these websites will start asking for donations instead or turning subscription based? I've donated small amounts to websites occasionally, if they ask for it. I think most people wouldnt mind donating whatever they can afford, if its a website they enjoy and use often
I disable my ad blocker on some sites that don't shove them into your face (reddit, google etc) and would gladly stop using one if annoying ads would stop existing. Jesus christ just try to read something on the path of exile wiki on mobile [sp]you can't[/sp]

If it was restrained to minor sidebars/top/bottom bars, with absolutely no malware/audio/pop-ups then I'd be willing to accept that in order for sites to stay afloat.
Jesus christ just try to read something on the path of exile wiki on mobile [sp]you can't[/sp]
it works if you use firefox on mobile with ublock origin installed

I think the guardian does it pretty well, it just has something at the bottom of your screen asking "like it? why not pay for it." instead of the typical popup a lot of sites use. My only other issue thus far is the websites that want you to make an account to donate. Most of the time I'd rather not.
Jesus christ just try to read something on the path of exile wiki on mobile [sp]you can't[/sp]
I don't even use the steam browser, I find it much better to alt-tab because a lot of those wikis actually wind up crashing the steam overlay for me lmao
https://adnauseam.io/ It's an extension based on uBlock Origin that automatically clicks on blocked ads. Google banned it from the Chrome Web Store. I suggest you fork the github project https://github.com/dhowe/AdNauseam
Ever since that report of banner ads that can infect your computer without even needing to be clicked on, Iv'e went full paranoid and just leave my adblock on for everything.
This. There are websites I would gladly disable ads for, if not for this. At this point it's less about my convenience and more about the integrity of my system.
I got a malware from Youtube once on a business computer when I interned at a web company. Two days into the internship. It was awkward explaining it to my supervisor... I'd unblock more sites from Adblock but I'm much too scared of tripping over something nasty. Better safe than sorry.
Good! I run ABP on a zero tolerance policy and it works great. The internet just isn't safe or useable without a zero tolerance policy on adverts. [editline]3rd February 2017[/editline]
Ever since that report of banner ads that can infect your computer without even needing to be clicked on, Iv'e went full paranoid and just leave my adblock on for everything.
It's not just being paranoid. Youtube has served malware to viewers many a time via hacked, infected adverts. It's just such a huge security nightmare and there really isn't much a typical webmaster can do if a tech giant like Google can't even prevent it.
I still need to find a good adblocker for android, getting pretty tired of them on there.
I still need to find a good adblocker for android, getting pretty tired of them on there.
If you have root, adaway is fantastic. It's a host-based adblocker (so it'll also work in apps,) you can get it on f-droid.
Ever since that report of banner ads that can infect your computer without even needing to be clicked on, Iv'e went full paranoid and just leave my adblock on for everything.
No kidding. Back in 2015, a couple of the message boards I regularly visit were basically unsafe for several days, because at the time Google ads were being hijacked and would instantly redirect you to sites filled with spyware.
Implement a regulatory organization which properly vets ads for malware and bans certain irritating practices and I'll consider disabling my adblock. Until then, so long as advertisements are literally a security threat I'm keeping it up. Sorry, I get that this is a primary source of revenue for the internet, but I get to decide what code runs on my machine. I disable for certain sites that I think are deserving of my support, and aren't annoying cunts, but that's about it.
as long as fake download button ads exist I will NEVER remove adblock for my mom's computer.
If you have root, adaway is fantastic. It's a host-based adblocker (so it'll also work in apps,) you can get it on f-droid.
Is there anything better than Adaway? It doesn't work at all for me. Most ads still go through, even if I add them to the custom filter file and re-apply it. Not to mention that popups still open.
What's worse is when sites block you from accessing their site because it detects you use an adblock. Like sorry I'm concerned for my computers safety. Maybe ads shouldn't be intrusive and slow your browser to a crawl.
Is there anything better than Adaway? It doesn't work at all for me. Most ads still go through, even if I add them to the custom filter file and re-apply it. Blocking via hosts is the most efficient way when it works. I'm surprised that adaway isn't working for you, are you SURE you're rooted and have enabled all of the filters/lists?
Browsing on mobile is the fucking worst, the ads are so much more intrusive from opening a punch of pages every time you try and scroll to completely changing what site you're on.
Someone has seen these numbers and thought "I better make ads MORE intrusive and annoying".
don't worry, they are trying
I wish I could just activate SOME ads. I have thought about disabling ublock on youtube because honestly the "five seconds and skip" and "little boxes during the video" ads don't bother me at all, then I remembered about the "you gotta watch this full ad and you can't skip it" ones and I decided against it.
don't worry, they are trying
Only a web dev could be miserable enough to inflict this upon other humans
I wouldn't mind ads so much if they didn't make them so invasive. I hate it when I want to read a news arricle on my phone and a HUGE ad pops up, takes up the screen, slows my phone down, and I'm usually unable to close it because the x button is too tiny.
Good. If a site wants money I'm fine with them having a donate button but advertising shits in your head. If I want a product or service I will research it for myself and I'm not going to click on some banner ad anyway.
don't worry, they are trying
I never thought the words "HTML5 was a mistake" would ever pop into my head, but there you have it.
I use ubo on my phone and compared to a month where I didn't have it and data usage was cut more than in half. Fuck websites that play 5 hd video at that you can't skip not only because the data but also how they slow or crashb mobile browsers. And don't get me started on the fake engrish riddled "you're phone is infect!" ads.
video ads that play at 200% volume can go die
