Brazil’s new lower house speaker has annulled last month’s impeachment vote against Dilma Rousseff in a twist that would stretch the credibility of a House of Cards plot.
The surprise move, which comes just days before the upper house was due to consider the motion, throws the legislature into chaos and could provide a lifeline to the embattled president.
Waldir Maranhao, who took over as acting speaker last week, said a new congressional vote would be needed as a result of procedural flaws in the previous session.
Maranhao is no friend of the government, prompting speculation that he may be acting on behalf of his predecessor, Eduardo Cunha, who was removed from his post by the supreme court on the grounds that he was interfering in a corruption investigation into his alleged kickbacks from the state-run oil company, Petrobras.
For the moment, however, uncertainty reigns. After last month’s lower house vote, the impeachment process was passed to the senate, where a committee recommended on Friday that the leftist president be put on trial by the full chamber for breaking budget laws.
In a news release, Maranhao said the impeachment process should be returned by the senate so that the lower house can vote again.
It remained unclear whether his decision could be overruled by the supreme court, the senate or a majority in the house.
Call me a fool, but what does that chart mean?
The value of the Brazilian Dollar, I believe.

what a mess.
BRL to USD (Which is already 1.5 above it should historically) and Petrobras stocks right after the process was nullified
Ouch. Now THAT'S gonna need a tetanus shot.
Shit
this is gonna fuck up us too
And with the recession we're having plus inflation, plus this, we're double time fucked up
Brace for South American Spring? I hope it goes over better than it did for most of the Arab Spring states (like Syria, good fucking god).
I just hope it doesn't turn out to be some new version of the same old shit where the destabilization happening in socialist regimes in South America is due to pressure from you know who again. If the systems are going to fail let it be by their own actions instead of external covert interference with sovereign matters.

yeah. not just the economy impact we are seeing right now, but a country with an unstable system doesnt look good for investors at all, hurting everyone a lot more on a not-so-distant future.

Frankly I can't blame them. I wouldn't want to invest in this country either.
And here they were telling us Brazil is an up and coming world power on par with China!
Brace for South American Spring?
nah, not at all there yet
And here they were telling us Brazil is an up and coming world power on par with China!
We made a lot of money doing business with China. We could've done a lot, but our politicians decided to squander the money.
edit:
The speaker of the Senate said he'll moving the process along. Confusion ensued and he called for a break so people could yell at each other.

oh no, a lot of south american countries with socialist regimes are quite capable of destroying themselves without a single ounce of foreign influence - just look at venezuela
And here they were telling us Brazil is an up and coming world power on par with China!
I'm pretty sure we had the potential. :suicide:
I'm pretty sure by now, both Venezuela and Brazil won't fix it's problems peacefully and quick.
Brace for South American Spring?
We successfully got rid of the populist cunts we had in office, for the last 12 years, so that's a start.
The current government is basically just picking up the pieces and building the whole thing from the ground up. We were far from being Brazil or Venezuela, but things were definitely headed that way.

And last time I checked, with Brazil so messed up, that somehow it benefits us, for being the only country in the region that's taken seriously and is basically opening their doors to the world.
Hence Obama's visit to Argentina pretty recently.

wait, what socialist regimes are you talking about?
wait, what socialist regimes are you talking about?
Well, okay, the Iran-Contra Affair involved a Central American socialist revolutionary regime, but close enough. Reagan's government destroyed large amounts of evidence ahead of the investigation too, surprise surprise.
I have no evidence or indication that there's pressure going on. I'm saying, fuck, I hope it doesn't turn out to be the case later.
