The Trump administration will not grant exemptions from its new aluminum and steel tariffs for allies such as Canada, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said Sunday, as he defended President Trump's sudden imposition of new trade premiums that are likely to hit Canada and Europe hardest.
“As soon as he starts exempting countries, he has to raise the tariff on everybody else,” Navarro said when asked about Canada and the European Union. “As soon as he exempts one country, his phone starts ringing with the heads of state of other countries.”
In a contentious interview with “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace, Navarro insisted that other countries won't retaliate in a way that hurts U.S. consumers, something disputed by many economists and some Republican lawmakers.
“There are no downstream price effects on our industries that are significant,” Navarro said on Fox, one of several interviews he did Sunday as the administration sought to promote and defend a decision that appears likely to start a global trade war.
The biggest burden of Trump’s new tariffs would be borne by Canada, the largest U.S. trading partner. Canada is the largest exporter of steel and aluminum to the United States, supplying $7.2 billion worth of aluminum and $4.3 billion of steel last year. Overall, the United States runs a trade surplus with Canada, which buys $48 billion worth of U.S. automobiles and $40 billion of machinery, in addition to agricultural products.
The steel and aluminum tariffs would also hit Britain, Germany, South Korea, Turkey and Japan, countries with which the United States has close national security ties.
Here comes the trade war, and the Trump administration is insisting consumers won't be affected. When consumers are inevitably affected, all blame lands squarely on the President's shoulders.
I don't have any witty jokes to make, this isn't even comically inept.

But the tariffs are designed to drive up the costs of imports compared to domestic production. There's two possibilities here; One, the tariffs themselves are going to be not significant, in which case why bother? Or, secondly, and more likely, he is lying, because Trump has exclusively surrounded himself with people who are comfortable telling brazen lies to the public. As an aside;

Don't worry, a war with North Korea will kickstart that economy right back into life! :downs:

I think he's been pissing on basically everyone who isn't a human rights abusing dictator. So basically anyone who isn't a complete piece of shit. The fact there are still people who support this utter joke of a man is sickening.

Note from who US actually imports steel from.
This disgusting traitor is actively destroying our country's alliances, Jesus Christ.
I hope Mueller's investigation ramps up quickly and soon, he cannot be allowed to stay in office any further before he causes irreparable damage to this country.
Yes, please hurry Mueller, you're our only hope of ousting this retard. If only we had enough dems to filibuster his horrible policies :/
From twitter rant to policy in a couple of days, what the fuck have we become.
Hey, Trump, start a trade war with Canada on oil and gas products next. What could possibly go wrong?

When Trump was elected I thought maybe a silver lining would be that America's economy would do better (at the cost of health care, rights, widespread racism, etc)
But he has a hard time not being incompetent at literally everything, unbelievable
If he was at least a little capable in any way, it'd make the narrative of him being a traitor less believable. But it gets to a point where you have to wonder if his actions are really just stupidity or something more sinister.

That's the one narrative I'm glad is publicly being destroyed: The idea that Trump is a good businessman when really, he just happens to have a very valuable surname.

Unfortunately, I was unable to convince anyone during the election that being rich doesn't make you smart or competent.
Hopefully Trump's performance accomplishes what I couldn't.

This, and Ben Carson taught me early on that just because someone is brilliant in one field doesn't mean he can't be completely retarded in many others.

Remember when nearly 400 economists signed a letter urging the public not to vote for Trump?
If this is as bad as it sounds why is this thing being pushed? Who’s benefitting from all of this?

The way Trump decides on policy is:
-he wakes up
-something pops into his head
-he posts "we're banning trannies/putting tariffs on steel/banning muslims!" on twitter
He's a hyperactive manchild. He does whatever he feels like.
I think I said awhile back that he is worse than not having a president and that you could easily replace him with some junior politician to just show up at official events.
I've refrained from posting this in every thread, but I saw this coming back when we realized that even winning the election wouldn't stop him from shitposting on twitter. You can't compare him with other bad presidents because he is really legitimately dumb and lacks a basic understanding of government that even outsiders would pick up on. Literally a meme that won an election.
I'm fairly certain that other countries will no longer trust the US even if a Democrat gets elected and does their best to fix this mess. Because they know full well that a Republican can get elected and fuck it up again

So, this is how the next recession starts.

This is sad because this has apparently happend a couple of times already.
I think there was even an article where Trump could be easily predicted based on what ran on Fox News, what he was going to write and when.
Russians begin running ads on Fox and Friends when?
Russians begin running ads on Fox and Friends when?
2017, probably, if not 2016.
In fact, that'd be an awfully fucking convenient way of conveying and "laundering" directives from the Kremlin. Not only is it a way of communicating to Trump what Putin wants him to do without him even necessarily being aware of it, by it airing in the middle of shows he watches on Fauxpaganda News, everyone else who exclusively watches Fox News is a candidate for a blind supporter, lending any directive to the President with at least some amount of instant popularity.
Mueller has already indicted an American who was selling basically forged identities to anyone on the Internet, and Russians used them to purchase social media ad space (used for highly-targeted propaganda) while appearing to be Americans engaging in normal, protected political speech before the election. Who's to say that since the election they didn't move to TV?

It's really quite horrifying that anyone with some money to burn can so easily manipulate our president.
