• New Orleans jail video shows inmates with drugs, guns, filth
(CNN) -- On shaky, grainy video recordings, a group of men show off a stash of pills, pop open Budweiser tall boys and shoot dice for stacks of cash. One injects what appears to be heroin; another displays a large-caliber pistol, ejecting four bullets from the chamber to show that it's loaded. Here's the punchline: These guys are already in jail. The scenes were captured in 2009 on a camera smuggled into the House of Detention in New Orleans, a decrepit lockup pressed back into service after Hurricane Katrina. The video's release during a federal court hearing this week sparked a new demand by the city's mayor for the federal government to take over the Orleans Parish prison system and a round of I-told-you-sos by advocates for the inmates held there. In addition to the displays of contraband, the inmates in the now-shuttered facility show themselves dishing out soup from bins in grungy, overcrowded cells and sleeping on mattresses laid on floors. One holds up glue traps he says are used to catch nutria, a rat-like pest that has infested much of southern Louisiana and notes that the jail was supposed to have been closed. "Why're we in here, then?" he asks. "ACLU investigated, and they told them it's closed down ... why're we in here?"
http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/03/justice/new-orleans-jail-video/index.html?hpt=ju_t5
Such a shining example of the American prison system.
This seems like a scene from a forgotten russian gulag, why is that legal!
Prision system needs to be reworked completely.
This seems like a scene from a forgotten russian gulag, why is that legal!
Its Louisiana Corrections in a nutshell. We don't exactly have a proud history in that area (or many others).
Such a shining example of the American prison system.
Hardly.. The correctional systems vary state to state, county to county. This is a shining example of a shitty county jail, clearly there is an issue with corruption. Which isn't surprising, Orleans has been in a fucked up state because of the hurricane and still is. A lot of people took advantage of that situation. How anyone can work in a facility like that is beyond me. I worked in corrections and shit like that is just a death trap waiting to happen. You can go to other states and find great examples of rehabilitation services and what would be considered "Cushie."
in my county jail the inmates have vending machines, skype, and microwaves. [editline]8th April 2013[/editline] and email service (screened obviously)
U.S needs to learn how to Norway their prisions.

More reason to see the American prison system for what it is, institutionalized incarceration of otherwise troublesome and socially active unemployed youth. If it was for punishment it would be more strict, if it was for rehabilitation it wouldn't be a drug-filled deathtrap. The private prison complex is probably up there with military-industrial for worst force in our society today.
Such a shining example of the American prison system.
A private prison! They don't give a fuck since they get paid no matter the treatment or punishment of prisoners, as long as they're there, they collect dollars.
U.S needs to learn how to Norway their prisions.
then prisons would take up a bigger area of the budget, and there would be even more pressure on the prison system because it wouldn't be that great a punishment.
U.S needs to learn how to Norway their prisions.
Except there is nor way they're going to do that.
then prisons would take up a bigger area of the budget, and there would be even more pressure on the prison system because it wouldn't be that great a punishment.
Prisons shouldn't be about punishing. They're suppose to remove danger from the public or ensure criminals don't become repeat offenders. The idea that putting them behind bars is some sort of moral punishment is silly, imo.
Prisons shouldn't be about punishing. They're suppose to remove danger from the public or ensure criminals don't become repeat offenders.
Except there is nor way they're going to do that.
Which is too bad, I think it would help Sweden up prisoners for when they get out.
Such a shining example of the American prison system.
1 Prison represents an entire country jail system. That's some smart logic you're using I tell ya h'wat.
If I learned anything from my childhood, it's that putting me in time-out would not prevent me from doing whatever once again in a few days time.
Kids are not adults.
This is close to reality, the prison system in this country is so corrupt and ineffective that it's usually easier to get narcotics in jail than on the street.
1 Prison represents an entire country jail system. That's some smart logic you're using I tell ya h'wat.
Hey. I get that it doesn't represent the entire US Jail system. However, you and I both know that the fact that there is even one prison like this within the US means that there is potential for others to be like it. Just because they haven't been filmed doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Rehabitation =/= putting pissed off criminals in cages for years with other worse criminals, then setting them free on society with no way to get a decent job/life.
One alternative is setting up labour camps in the middle of nowhere, that keeps them away and overall benefits law-abiding society.
And this prevents them from reoffending... how?
One alternative is setting up labour camps in the middle of nowhere, that keeps them away and overall benefits law-abiding society.
I know you are a Russophile but gulags aren't the solution buddy.
One alternative is setting up labour camps in the middle of nowhere, that keeps them away and overall benefits law-abiding society.
Right because sending people to work in the mines as punishment has worked so well for human rights throughout history.
is this jail called Oz or something, jesus thats bad
My friend just got out of jail in a small Michigan county, he said he traded his food for Valium, and he traded his coffee every morning to a guy who'd drink it, then he'd write my friend step by step instruction on how to grow pot.
Kids are not adults.
Kids are obviously not adults but the point still stands. if you were to put me in time out I would probably laugh at you and continue what I was doing.
Kids are not adults.
You've missed my point. Simply locking them up will not alone prevent a repeat of their crime.
