Alan Rusbridger, editor of The Guardian, wrote on Monday about an unsettling encounter with "security experts" from the U.K.'s GCHQ intelligence agency.
According to Rusbridger, "a very senior government official" contacted him about two months ago demanding the surrender or destruction of all materials in the publication's possession relating to the surveillance operations uncovered by Edward Snowden.
About a month later, Rusbridger recalls receiving a phone call "from the centre of government" in which he was told, "You've had your fun. Now we want the stuff back."

"And so one of the more bizarre moments in the Guardian's long history occurred – with two GCHQ security experts overseeing the destruction of hard drives in the Guardian's basement just to make sure there was nothing in the mangled bits of metal which could possibly be of any interest to passing Chinese agents. "We can call off the black helicopters," joked one as we swept up the remains of a MacBook Pro." -Alan Rusbridger
Getting reeeeeeeeeaaaaally tired of your shit, US/UK intelligence services...

Accidentally used the HuffPo's headline and quotes in the link instead, oops. :v:
I was going to reference HuffPo and then realized, hey, why not link directly to the source. So, there's the HuffPo story as well.
Knee jerk reaction is to say that what they did was wrong, despicable and unwarranted.
Second reaction is to say that a newspaper having potential war-starting material in it's basement is scary as shit.
What should have happened was a co-op between the two groups in which the government allowed the Newspaper to keep all the documentation, but only if the Guardian contacted the government before putting anything gleaned from the files into print.
I hope they had copies elsewhere

Shit like this is why cloud storage is important.
I hope they had copies elsewhere
Maybe Snowden still has a copy. I doubt they'd keep stuff like that in the possession of only 1 entity.
I hope they had copies elsewhere
According to the article it seems to infer that they do and that this was merely one of their information stores.
Whitehall was satisfied, but it felt like a peculiarly pointless piece of symbolism that understood nothing about the digital age. We will continue to do patient, painstaking reporting on the Snowden documents, we just won't do it in London. The seizure of Miranda's laptop, phones, hard drives and camera will similarly have no effect on Greenwald's work.

Shit like this is why cloud storage is important.
That would just mean it is in another [del]castle[/del] hard-drive
What a pointless and horrific gesture on the part of the 52nd state of the USA.
That would just mean it is in another [del]castle[/del] hard-drive
Which are usually hidden quite well from the public, or you know, impossible to break into.
Which are usually hidden quite well from the public, or you know, impossible to break into.
It isn't exactly hard to trace somebody's cloud storage, then all the US / UK has to do is contact the company and say "Yeah, we gotta get this stuff removed from your servers, or ya know: we break shit".
The best and most safe method is still to just have copies on Hard drives, flash drives, and SD cards distributed wherever you can keep them safe.
That would just mean it is in another [del]castle[/del] hard-drive
Not if it's ~in the cloud~

What's the 51st?

Makes you wonder what kind of shit the government has done that would make them so paranoid, we need a revolution, this shit has got to stop but people just sit there and bend over and take it up the ass.........
Its funny how our governments are the terrorists that they tell us they're protecting us from.
The future is looking bleak.

"We're from the Government, and We're Here to Help"
I can only imagine some of them saying this with the biggest shit eating grins in existence.
Guys, what's the difference between the US government and the mafia?
[sp]One is an organized group of thugs that abuses its wealth and influence to further its self interests, often using brutal force and unethical tactics to intimidate or destroy any who oppose them.[/sp]
[sp]The other is a group that wears nice suits.[/sp]
Maybe the government should start to protect its citizens from itself.
Maybe the government should start to protect its citizens from itself.
I don't think I am going to refer to the US government as 'the US government' or 'our government' anymore. It's clearly gone rogue, and no longer serves the public's best interests. I'm going to start referring to them as 'the occupying regime' or 'the regime'. After all, that's what we refer to despotic leadership in places like Iraq and Libya, so might as well call a spade a spade.
do you see what we're doing for you america
ARE YOU PROUD OF US YET AMERICA
do you see what we're doing for you america

maybe when they take over the world they'll be kind enough to enslave us

good job FUCKING UP THE JOKE
also it's the UK that did this, no the US
uk agency does something shitty regarding a man who's being hunted and is making international headlines
"yeah but the us is pulling the strings we can just ignore the fact that the agency wasn't american or anything because fuck america
:)"

According to the BBC article on the matter they told the people from GCHQ this and that is the reason they complied. Apparently its being stored in countries that are more protective of journalists rights. I heard America mentioned, due to the constitution. Which is hilarious when you think about what the content is..

Israel
Two other things:
Did anyone in the UK see the 10 o'clock news last night? They "showed" the destroyed HDD, looked like a PCIe graphics card and a motherboard. WTF was going on with that, did the BBC just go for stock footage of destroyed components. I just noticed the image is in the article below \/
And secondly it appears (also according to the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23776063) that David Cameron ordered it himself.
Oh also, Theresa May and others are claiming that the stuff Snowden is leaking is going to help terrorists? I just find this hilarious and thought it should be mentioned.

I didn't watch the News, but the website is right.

It was in terrible context on the news last night, not helped by the fact they then panned the camera to a macbook sitting next to the bits that clearly came out of a PC.
Anyway I wrote that first bit before I reopened the link, they added it at some point between when I first read it earlier and when I posted it.
Not surprised, UK is a American satellite state
I don't think this has anything to do with America to be honest. From the dates given by the editor of the Guardian it seems they turned up around the time they made public the fact that GCHQ used the G8 meeting as a fishing trip to gather intel from anyone and everyone present.
