• Canada will not tighten US-Canadian border despite influx of illegal migrants and asylum seekers
TORONTO — Canada is enforcing border laws and is willing to put more resources in place to deal with the influx of asylum seekers from the United States, but it will not tighten its border to deter migrants crossing illegally from the United States, a government minister said Saturday. Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the issue had not risen to a scale that required hindering the flow of goods and people moving across the world’s longest undefended border. Hundreds of people, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, have defied winter conditions and walked across the border, seeking asylum. They are fleeing President Trump’s immigration crackdown, migrants and refugee agencies say.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/canada-no-plans-for-a-border-clampdown-to-deter-asylum-seekers-coming-from-us/2017/03/04/7a89f516-0124-11e7-99b4-9e613afeb09f_story.html?utm_term=.360ca0f2d647
From what I understand of the situation (correct me if I'm wrong), Trump has done very little to remove (deport, etc.) current migrants/refugees that reside in the United States. All he's done is a travel ban at most. I'm not 100% sure what Trumps "immigration crackdown" is, but I don't think he's got the stones to deport any immigrants/refugees that are currently in the US and applying for refugee status. I can't remember the name of the law/motion/etc. that makes it illegal for migrants/refugees to move to a country that's different from their port of entry, but Canada isn't enforcing that law, which is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. I'm all for having people come to our country as safely as possible (from a border security standpoint, as well as a refugee health standpoint - ie. not losing hands to frostbite) but to just let anyone cross over illegally seems like it'll just open a whole new can of worms.
Trump has done very little to remove (deport, etc.) current migrants/refugees that reside in the United States.
Because his platform was for the removal of unregistered illegal immigrants which make up the bulk of the problem? Up here from what I've interpreted these are people who took the boat across the ocean to South and central America, then smuggled themselves through the states to our border where they THEN threw their hands up and used a clause to jump the line and apply for asylum status. These are not people who spent their whole lives living in the United States. I'm more than willing to welcome them here but was going through all that effort and risk worth it for what amounts to a queue bump? This isn't like they are jumping the border and making it into Europe. Some of these people have been travelling for months if not years.
Hundreds of people, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, have defied winter conditions and walked across the border, seeking asylum.
You can join them, Canada is open for the time being
I originally worded my post as "I don't feel comfortable about..." then I realized I'm pretty comfy all things considered. It just sucks being that country now.
You can join them, Canada is open for the time being
instead of wanting to change the country for the better he should leave? is this the "deal with it" argument again?
