The band was founded in early 2001 in Raleigh, North Carolina by vocalist Tommy Rogers, guitarist Paul Waggoner, drummer Will Goodyear, guitarist Nick Fletcher (formerly Empire Falls), and bassist Jason King.[5]
Between the Buried and Me's first release was a three-song demo, containing the tracks "Use of a Weapon," "What We Have Become," and "More of Myself to Kill." These three tracks were re-recorded for the band's first full-length album, Between the Buried and Me, released on Lifeforce Records in 2002. Musical style varied, with hints of death metal, grindcore, indie, and thrash metal. This album includes the track "Arsonist," a protest against the beliefs and practices of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. The song "Aspirations" became the band's first music video. This album is not widely known and the tracks are rarely played live, but it did get the attention of Victory Records, to which they later signed. Victory Records reissued the album in 2004 as an enhanced CD.
In 2003, the band released their second studio album, The Silent Circus, featuring the singles "Mordecai", "Aesthetic", and "Camilla Rhodes". "Mordecai"[6] was produced as their second music video. The album was re-released in 2006 with a live DVD of the band's performance at The Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on July 17, 2005. Mark Castillo played drums on The Silent Circus replacing Will Goodyear however, on the live DVD Blake Richardson, Dustie Waring, and Dan Briggs had already joined the band and recording for Alaska was already finished.
In early 2005 the band changed their lineup. Drummer Blake Richardson replaced Mark Castillo, bassist Dan Briggs replaced Jason King, and guitarist Dustie Waring replaced Nick Fletcher.
In the summer of 2005, Between the Buried and Me released their third studio album, Alaska. The title track "Alaska" became their third music video. This release included the singles "Selkies: The Endless Obssession", "The Primer", and "Backwards Marathon". On this album the band shows their musical prowess, the last track on the CD "Laser Speed" mixes salsa with a conglomeration of traditional jazz and free form bossa nova.
In 2006, the band released The Anatomy Of..., a collection of covers of bands that influenced Between the Buried and Me, including Metallica, King Crimson, Queen, Pink Floyd, Earth Crisis, Counting Crows, and Blind Melon.
In September 2007, the band released their fourth studio album, Colors. The band has said that "it's a 65 minute opus of non stop pummeling beautiful music... we have described this release as 'new wave polka grunge.'"[7] Elsewhere, they have also described it as "adult contemporary progressive death metal."[citation needed].
On November 6, the song "Prequel to the Sequel" was made available as downloadable content for Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on the Playstation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace.[8]
As of mid December 2008, the band has finished a song for their follow up to Colors. Describing it as a "noisy Coalesce breakdown, 3/4 Mastodon groove, 9/8 Mars Volta, Queen chromatic build up, and Megadeth chorus"[9]. Tommy Rogers has stated they plan to 'out do Colors'. [10] The group is scheduled to go back to the studio May 31.
So basically, this band is your average metal/screamo/whateveryoukidscallitnowadays band. NOT. This band has it's own amazingly unique playing style, going from Soft Rock, to metal, to polka, and grunge. So, here's the albums.

This album is probably MY favorite of theirs, displaying all of their skill, with amazing lyrics, and all instruments. All sorts of varieties of music are on here, going from instrumentals to...unexplainable works of art. All the songs play into eachother, although you can start from the middle of the album and not start in the middle of a verse.
Track Listing:
1. All Bodies – 6:12
2. Alaska – 3:57
3. Croakies and Boatshoes – 2:22
4. Selkies: The Endless Obsession – 7:23
5. Breathe In, Breathe Out – 0:55
6. Roboturner – 7:07
7. Backwards Marathon – 8:27
8. Medicine Wheel – 4:18
9. The Primer – 4:46
10. Autodidact – 5:30
11. Laser Speed – 2:53
The Anatomy of

2. "Kickstart My Heart" (Mötley Crüe cover) (Nikki Sixx) – 4:55

10. "Change" (Blind Melon cover) (Blind Melon) – 4:07
11. "Malpractice" (Faith No More cover) (Mike Patton) – 4:02
12. "Little 15" (Depeche Mode cover) (Martin L. Gore) – 4:31
13. "Cemetery Gates" (Pantera cover) (Phil Anselmo, Darrell Abbott, Rex Brown, Vinne Paul Abbott) – 7:05
14. "Colorblind" (Counting Crows cover) (Adam Duritz, Charlie Gillingham) – 3:47
Colors

This is my second favorite album of theirs, also where they display all of their talent. All the songs play into eachother, and if you put it on shuffle, most of the songs STILL play into eachother well. It's kind of scary.
Track Listing:
1. "Foam Born (a) The Backtrack" – 2:13
2. "Foam Born (b) The Decade of Statues" – 5:20
3. "Informal Gluttony" – 6:47
4. "Sun of Nothing" – 10:59
5. "Ants of the Sky" – 13:10
6. "Prequel to the Sequel" – 8:36
7. "Viridian" – 2:51
8. "White Walls" – 14:13

Prog metal at it's finest.
Their drummer is freaking jesus at the drums.
Oh also, the band describes themselves as New Era Polka Grunge. Because they're that fucking awesome.
Wait what the fuck?? That first picture is DEFINITELY not them

Yeah, way to fail at knowing what one of your favorite bands even looks like and just searching google images.
Some of the best Prog Metal I have ever heard. I'm going to go listen to them now.
I was about to say, I didn't know that BTBAM had a black guy in the band.
Either way, they are an amazing band. I love the bluegrass breakdown at the end of Ants of the Sky.
Haha I just threw the name into google images and got the first one, I'll replace it now.
Much better now.
Colors is one of my favorite albums ever.
Oh my God 8-biy Mordecai fucking awesome!

Lol
the guy's growl is shit, the riffs are mediocre, the bass isn't even mediocre because you can't hear it, there's barely any solos, the only solos are fairly easy and contain no sort of emotion it seems.
the drumming... the drumming is fine for a metalcore band, I've seen better.
uh.. what else
in all bullshit, I've heard it all before, they've done nothing for the metalcore scene, and it would be better if they didn't exist in order to preserve death metal's name.
Thanks for expressing your opinion. I would like to inform you that your speakers must be blown, because it's pretty easy to hear the bass. Also, so does that mean that EVERY song that doesn't have a solo is instantly shitty?
[editline]06:34AM[/editline]
Also, you fail because they aren't metalcore. That's like calling Metallica jazz, or calling Eminem good.

yes they are metalcore.
bass line is mediocre, and each song should build up to some sort of musical orgasm, or yeah, it's shit
yes they are metalcore.

No, their not metalcore and you are dead wrong on that. Some of the better songs I listen to, not even by this band, lack a huge build-up-into-massive-solo part. Just because it dosen't have a solo dosen't mean it sucks.

yes they are metal core, and songs without a massive breakdown/solo sux, especially in the metal genres.
unless the riffs are catch as fuck, and that's very rare.
You've probably only heard 10 seconds of one of their songs right?

catch as fuck?
Don't worry, he's just trolling.
Woah.
I thought this thread was uber old (cuz I've read it a long time ago) and then I realized that it was only posted 12 hours ago.
I'll give the band a spin. You suggest an album to start with?

You think everyone who disagrees with your interests is a troll.
But I guess most furries think that way.

I don't like their growling, but otherwise they are pretty cool.

It's not that I disagree. :downs: It's that almost everything he said was flat out wrong.
If you can't hear the bass you are deaf. If you think the riffs or solos are easy you obviously don't play guitar.
Just get the fuck out and stop shitting all over every post I make. I swear to God, if I just had five minutes alone with you.

Sorry I don't enjoy one night stands or fursuit sex.
I just ordered Colors (actually I ordered it last thursday but they haven't sent it yet). Looking forward to hearing it.
These guys are definitely some of my favorite Prog Death Metal musicians. I have their albums Colors and Alaska so far. Don't listen to deathtobelievers he doesn't know what he is talking about at all. Between the Buried and Me is far from a metalcore band.
I'll give Colors a listen. I'll even write up a review.
[editline]06:00PM[/editline]
Or not.
I can't find a single song off of Colors on YouTube that isn't a shitty personal cover or live.
*shrug*
This guy has the whole album uploaded I think:
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=darren50416&view=videos&query=between+the+buried+and+me
Some of the songs are in two parts though, since they're so long.
[editline]11:29AM[/editline]
Oh, never mind. He doesn't have the first track for some reason.
I don't like their metalness, but the rest of it is good. Prequel to the Sequel is on Rockband 2, and it starts out good and then goes to shit (then again it's not the full version)
Actually, I'd argue that it starts out good and stays good, if not better.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
