Announcement:
Blizzard announces they'll be holding each of the WCS S2 Regional finals (NA, EU, KR) on the same weekend. Same time as The International 3.
https://twitter.com/Slasher/status/359395359178498048 Official Blizzard employee:
We wanted to clarify a few points regarding the timing of the WCS Season 2 League Finals. Given the intricacies of coordinating schedules between multiple regions and partners, travel requirements for pro-gamers, availability of appropriate venues, and more, it's quite a challenge to align all these often conflicting priorities. When we add in the schedules of other events which we have no control over, this adds another layer of unworkable complexity. So how did we arrive at the dates for the major WCS Season 2 events? What we knew is that we wanted to have ESL produce a world-class Finals event at gamescom in Germany in late August, which they'll be announcing more details about very soon. That meant working the schedule backward from that point. In order to give partners enough time to plan and execute for a global Season 2 Finals at gamescom, there was only a small window of opportunity for us to have the various regional finals. Unfortunately this has resulted in overlaps with other major eSports events. These conflicts were certainly not intentional. This simple fact is that as eSports has grown with more events, more games, and more viewers; it's nearly impossible to avoid all conflicts. Many major weekend events already host multiple games, which are running simultaneous game streams in conflict with each other. That said, we do understand the various concerns that players, teams, and viewers have with this particular conflict and as we have in the past, will continue to do our best to avoid this type of overlap in the future.
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1iujfw/wcs_2013_season_2_league_finals/ Total Biscuit:
If you understood the bloody concerns you wouldn't have done it to begin with. It's not like The International 3 just popped up out of nowhere. This is yet another example of rushed WCS nonsense and stumbling over self-made hurdles. This is not an MLG with several games running at once with different, distinct audiences, this is The International 3, playing the game with the most cross-pollenation between spectators outside of the FGC, with the largest prizepool in the history of everything and months of hype leading up to it. Your analogy is seriously flawed. You guys really fouled this up and you hurt all of us in the process.
tl;dr Blizzard decides to hold all 3 of their Starcraft 2 World Championship Series finals on the same weekend. Also on that same weekend is the Dota 2 International 2013. Nobody is happy with this announcement and many believe that Blizzard decided to do this on purpose as a fuck you to Dota 2 as Dota 2 is getting incredibly popular and a lot of its players are from SC2 or play both games. Even if this was a coincidence, it shows how poor the quality of WCS is compared to LoL or Dota 2 tournaments. Either way, Blizzard is shooting itself in the foot.
Blizzard is still mad they didn't get Dota.
I don't care about the international 3 at all, but I did want to watch the season 2 finales of WCS. They're all on the same weekend, who planned this? No one is going to be able to watch them all.
Hey Blizzard, can I have a job? I bet I could fuck up a lot less shit for a nice price of 20$ an hour. I bet that a lot cheaper then what you're paying the idiot that did this. Common sense would've fucking prevented this problem. The offer is on the table Blizzard. Your move.
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1iujfw/wcs_2013_season_2_league_finals/cb865tz
blizzard are fucking morons with this wcs shit. the first WCS was pretty mint
But Blizzard has got Blizzard All-Stars! They got nothing to worry about!
Unfortunately this has resulted in overlaps with other major eSports events. These conflicts were certainly not intentional.
Does this not reek of a 6 on the Dvorak BS meter?
I don't understand this. TI3 is going to blow them out of the water. That will be really humiliating for Blizzard, actually. also RIP in pieces .tv
From Totalbiscuit's twitter:
I'm pretty sure Blizzard have enough hardcore fans that they'll get away with this.
Speaking as someone who has never watched a game of DOTA, The International 3 is going to kill the warmed over mess that is WCS. Team Liquid is a warzone right now, r/starcraft is a bloodbath with nothing but Pros, Casters, Team Managers and fans (myself included) calling Blizzard idiots in no uncertain terms. Team Liquid is pissed because revenue from both thier Dota and SCII teams are going to be cannibalized; same goes for EG's Alliance. Even teams with no conflict's like Total Biscuit's Axiom are going to suffer heavily from any cannibalization. Moreover, who has the fucking time to watch 3 regional championships in the same weekend! Twitch's servers are going to explode, leaving Dota's in game watching standing pretty, and Dustin Browder is going to play the sixth trumpet that sings the song that ends mankind.
I'm pretty sure Blizzard have enough hardcore fans that they'll get away with this.
Valve has the casuals and the Steam advertisements to dwarf them.
Blizzard needs to spend less effort trying to ruin Dota 2 and spend more effort on making good games. We already have Riot Games trying to murder Dota 2.
I bet that the majority of people from each game's fanbase don't even pay the least attention to other MOBAs.
We already have Riot Games trying to murder Dota 2.
wat
i have to say this is impressive foot shooting by blizzard i mean how could you fuck up THAT hard?
i saw this announcement after work and just started laughing who the fuck thinks that scheduling a tournament, let alone three high-cost tournaments, on the same weekend as the biggest esports tournament in history is a good idea? there simply isn't a way to beat dota's native client spectating mode with its fantastic tournament support gg blizz
wat
http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1gg6jm/why_so_much_hate_for_lol/cajwsi1
wat
Riot has actively tried to stop DotA2 from growing by paying tournaments not to host the game. Oh and Pendragon works for Riot who is basically Hitler to the DotA2 community for what he did to us.
The only reason I could believe that this was unintentional happenstance was that it doesn't benefit anyone. The biggest losers are fans of both games who now need to pick and choose which games they want to follow. It comes across as a dumb move from a company with impeccable marketing.
http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1gg6jm/why_so_much_hate_for_lol/cajwsi1
Holy shit
http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1gg6jm/why_so_much_hate_for_lol/cajwsi1
Don't know about a lot of these points. Especially when they use a lot of words like "speculated" "hasn't been confirmed" "I don't have a link for it". Don't really want to turn this thread into an argument but a few of these points are a bit shady.
Yeah some of them lack evidence or a source.
so, one of those? :v: (The icefrog one, which is probably just a troll)
Don't know about a lot of these points. Especially when they use a lot of words like "speculated" "hasn't been confirmed" "I don't have a link for it". Honestly if you are a fan of both, just watch dota. Maybe that will teach blizzard?
I used to be a very avid StarCraft player for years and I love watching the competitive games, but in all honesty I find DotA more exciting. I wanted to watch the WCS, but I guess I simply won't this year. Bye Blizzard, you've grown old and have obviously passed your prime. I miss the days of Diablo 2 and Brood War, not the messes they've created nowadays.
Each of his points have a source, and the one that he said he didn't have a link, he edited to tell you what the site was.
I personally looked up some of the points. Besides points 2 and 3 which are rumors, point 4 is flat out false as it was an ad by Garena who publish LoL in SEA (and a lot of other games such as HoN, Perfect World etc etc) however maintain independent operations for the most part. proof that it's an Garena ad point 5 I don't see what's wrong with it.
The pair filed for the trademark themselves "to protect the work that [original DotA creator] Eul, Guinsoo and dozens of other modders have done to create the game," Pendragon told Joystiq via email. He added that, "if we were to obtain the trademark, we would keep the game and the DotA name freely available to the mod community."
Seems like he just wants to keep the name free as opposed to Valve commercializing it which is a debatable decision. point 6 was a misunderstanding which is stated so in the article itself so I don't know why that's there. The last one may be true, not sure. It shows DotA2 in the Valve complete pack and translators handing out DotA2 keys to chinese players when I thought you couldn't do that? Pendragon conspiracy I can't really talk about but overall I can't really see many solid points.

Also about point 5, Pendragon gives zero fucks about the DotA community. That's the problem. He says he wants to have the name used freely in the mod community when he himself has commit genocide on it. Then he decides like years later that he cares about it? Bullshit. Point 6 is actually a fact. Many teams and tournaments have reported it, and Riot backtracked when they found out the information was public. Though I cannot confirm it myself, I'm pretty sure most of the LoL community that witnessed this event would agree that Riot did make an exclusivity contract and backtracked. EDIT: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?s=&t=2549978
Riot wants organizations who field a LoL team and a Dota 2, HoN, or BLC team to drop their Dota/HoN/BLC teams or face being banned from Season 3 tournaments. The community found out yesterday, a ****storm happened, and a Red posted here that those accusations are false. Then it was found out today that those accusations are true but Riot gave up on them when teams wouldn't give in to Riot's demands.
EDIT2: Apparently the International is also going to be streamed on Youtube Live also: https://twitter.com/BTSGoDz/status/359535357290758146 So GG to Blizzard. There are 3 now sites/ways of watching the International, while only 1 site to watch WCS. For anyone that doesn't know, Twitch.tv has had huge lag issues lately and many predict that the issues won't be cleared up anytime soon. You will only be able to watch WCS on twitch.tv.

Garena handles LoL in SEA exclusively and use a completely independent marketing and microtransactions system compared to the main servers. Also another hint is that the art in the ad is the Asian art which Riot rarely use in promotions unless they explicitly adopt it. (For Shen and Akali they haven't) I guess fair enough on the exclusivity point. I did a bit of research and there are still a bit of loose ends in the whole thing. Complexity and EG didn't even have LoL teams during the fiasco, not to mention Dignitas also said it was just a rumor. There were also a lot of other teams who had squads for both games and there hasn't been a word from them, CLG, iG and SK to name a few. Maybe it was an understanding, maybe not. Riot probably did have the policy at some point but I don't see how that's that relevant anymore considering it was overturned pretty quickly.

Just because they decided to take back their exclusivity policies doesn't mean that all their actions are now justified and all is right in the world. Riot Games recognizes Dota 2 as huge competition and they don't want to compete fairly. This is somewhat irrelevant, but Valve posted this picture to the Dota 2 Instagram about 12 hours ago: http://instagram.com/p/cFGIIoI8hR/
