Hey guys so i got up this morning to a phone call from an Asian woman claiming i have loads of viruses in my computer and my personal information was a risk from hackers blah blah blah.... anyhow she put me onto a bloke after i told them my event viewer had a few errors ( as a cover ) and they tried to get me to go on the remote support on they're website claiming it was "Microsoft Certified". Anyhow i did a little digging and saw they were related to scams done in other countries ( i asked them where they were based and they said the UK then gave me a bogus address that i searched and found nothing ) So i rang up and shopped them to trading standards and gave them the phone number they called me on and i was just thinking if they had looked me up via a tracking cookie or anything i figured you guys would have similar website visits and stuff so i thought this might be worth bringing to attention in case someone does fall for it. So yeah don't trust anyone calling from Greybytes.
Since greybytes is run by an actual registered company, http://www.ftc.gov/
I am not from the UK, but with any company based there should have a Company tax reference number. (Something akin to a EIN in the US) You could use that to file a complaint against them.
Look at the whois. It's run by Indians. What do you expect?
My mate got this just last night. The knew his name and everything, which was kinda weird. They told him to download thinktech software at a website called 247pccare or something like that. He downloaded it (Stupidly, bless him) and they were remotely controlling his computer. He rang me so I told him to unplug his internet connection and I went over to reformat his PC :v: Crazy shit.
Reputable organizations do not hire female Asian telemarketers. Your claim seems valid. [editline]10th March 2011[/editline] I hope they call me. :c00lbert:
Wow, anyone who falls for this and hasn't already registered their actual phone number on that site is a fucking idiot
Lol, how would someone know that you had viruses on your computer over the phone? I fucking hate those stupid shit things.
Get a PC and put lots of furryporn on it, then let them have a look.
Can't trust suckahs on the internet.
Get a PC and put lots of furryporn on it, then let them have a look.
You're just saying that because you already have; this has barely any novelty value relative to the situation whatsoever.

This happened to me last week, except it sounded like a fat russian guy.
Some Asian people keep calling me saying they are from Microsoft saying I have a virus blah blah I told "I know things about computers and viruses and you are telling bullshit" I hang up, haven't been called since, And I'm in Victoria, Australia!

I work in IT, doing a traineeship in Information Technology (aiming for a certificate III - done a load of prior knowledge shit so I'm only in it for the credit). I told him this and then said that he was bullshitting me. Motherfucker turns around and said "Oh, I'm bullshitting am I?" I told him that Windows doesn't have a "Technical Support" section at all, Microsoft does and I was only speaking to them yesterday at work. He hung up.
What exactly were they doing remotely?
Searching for his porn, obliviously!
You're just saying that because you already have; this has barely any novelty value relative to the situation whatsoever.
So if you're trying to scam someone and check his PC and see furryporn you wouldn't be shocked? mhm okay then
You should of just let them install a virus on a virtual machine so they can wonder why its not working
This is getting really low, I wonder what the government will do about this?
Tell them this is a shitty scheme to make money. Tell them they should sell gold in mmorpg's because that works better.
They're actually calling you to get you to install a rat?
wow how sad this shit is ridiculous
Didn't I make a thread of the same thing happening like a week ago? Are they getting more frequent or something... [editline]12th March 2011[/editline] They took you to "LogMeIn" where you enter a six digit code? Yep, it's a scam. [editline]12th March 2011[/editline] My thread here has all the links to information sources. This only happened to me 5 days ago... [editline]12th March 2011[/editline]
Some Asian people keep calling me saying they are from Microsoft saying I have a virus blah blah I told "I know things about computers and viruses and you are telling bullshit" I hang up, haven't been called since, And I'm in Victoria, Australia!
So am I! Victoria REPRESENT!
They called me, I also live in Victoria, Australia, and told me they were from Microsoft then asked me what version of Windows I had. I asked why they didn't know, because if they were Microsoft they'd know what I'd registered. After about 3 different people and the supervisor I finally hung up because they were so stupid.
I'm in Victoria, these bastards call me all the time. My usual response is "But I have a mac, I can't get viruses! STOP LYING!", or that I'm using Windows 3.1
or that I'm using Windows 3.1
Best reply in the thread. That's a pretty golden response.
I'm in Victoria, but not the Victoria you guys think.
I'd personally launch up a VM and install it on that. Mess with their minds a bit.
