The eyesight of children under six could be harmed by 3D games played on Nintendo's forthcoming handheld console, the company warns.
The games giant posted the health warning on the website devoted to the 3DS handheld.
It said specialists had warned of possible damage that could be caused by 3D games which present different images to the right and left eye.
Younger children should only play 2D versions of 3DS games, said Nintendo.
The 3DS, the successor to the hugely popular DS handheld, goes on sale in late February in Japan and in Europe and the US in March.
The new handheld has two screens like older versions of the console with the top screen being able to show 3D images without the need for special glasses.
Parents should turn off this function if the handheld is going to be used by a child under six years of age, said Nintendo. It said the advice it had received from experts also applied to other 3D content that younger children might be exposed to.
In issuing the warning, Nintendo joins Sony and Toshiba in alerting people to the ill effects that can attend watching 3D movies or playing 3D games.
Sony has already said that parents should get medical advice before letting children watch 3D content on the PlayStation. Toshiba has said parents should keep an eye on children watching its TVs that can display 3D images without needing glasses.
The companies have also warned that watching too much 3D content can cause adults discomfort.
Nice one Nintendo, making your target audience blind!
It provides an image to each of your eyes, it is no different from normal sight. Bullshit.
It provides two images to both of your eyes, it is no different from normal sight. Bullshit.
It says it projects a different image to each eye, what world do you live in?
I bet Nintendo didn't see that happening.
Well of course their sight could be affected, we don't see 3D digital images that often, we're not use to it.
Solution: Don't let people under 6 play 3DS
Oh no, their key demographic
It provides an image to each of your eyes, it is no different from normal sight. Bullshit.
yes i'm sure you know more about this than both the engineers designing it and the medical experts they've contacted about it, mr Fatal-Error with a P.H.d in asshaterry

Maybe you think harmful means they go blind? No.
It would be harmful in that they're visual cortex would develop adversly because of the 3D stimuli. 3D technology is an illusion to perception, but it's only an illsuion because of the way our brains and eyes communicate. A child under 6 hasn't yet fully developed their brain.
It's bad voodoo.

He only has a bachelor's of science in asshattery
It says it projects a different image to each eye, what world do you live in?
The left eye and right eye both get different 2D images. The brain merges them together in an amazing job.
and parents wont listen or read the warning and buy there 6 year olds the 3DS.
I hate this new 3D trend :/
I'm pretty sure all games can hurt the eyesight of children.
Wonder what discreet thinks of the console name?
It's literally impossible to sensationalize more than this.
3d is dumb
It says it projects a different image to each eye, what world do you live in?
That's what he's saying. Because these work by sending different images to each eye, exactly like real life, and he doesn't see why it would mess up children's eyesight.
What kind of parent lets toddlers play videogames
Don't 3D screens not work for people with only one eye?
Well of course their sight could be affected, we don't see 3D digital images that often, we're not use to it.

A better solution would be to just not let anyone under 6 play the 3DS in 3d, seeing as the 3DS has a slider which controls that anyway.
Don't 3D screens not work for people with only one eye?
Yep. Since it's projecting a different image into each eye, pirates won't be able to enjoy Avatar.
Yep. Since it's projecting a different image into each eye, pirates won't be able to enjoy Avatar.
Ironic, since Avatar was the most pirated movie in 2010
It says it projects a different image to each eye, what world do you live in?
You have no idea how our eyes work.
You have no idea how our eyes work.
Why? He's right. Each eye needs a slightly different angle to be able to perceive depth
Fucking stupid 3d shit. What's next? Canned cheese?
What kind of parent lets toddlers play videogames
I've played games since I was about 4 years old. So a lot of parents do I guess?
You have no idea how our eyes work.
You have no idea how 3D works. That's exactly what it does, it directs a different image into each eye, tricking our brain into seeing depth where there is none.
Then I guess they'll have to turn the 3D off, won't they?
So I just turned 7 yesterday, will I be ok?
I can't wait until this 3D Trend is over.
I don't really think anyone under 6 could pick up and play a 3DS anyways.
