Scientists in Israel are exploring another medical use for marijuana: Their research indicates that a compound in the plant helps heal bone fractures.
The new study, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, found that broken bones healed faster and stronger when the patient received the non-psychoactive compound cannabidiol, or CBD.
"We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue," said Dr. Yankel Gabet, one of the lead researchers, in a statement. "After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future."
Researchers administered CBD to a group of rats with mid-femoral fractures. After just eight weeks, they saw marked improvement in the broken bones. They injected another group of rats with a mixture of CBD and THC, marijuana's psychoactive ingredient. Comparing the results, they concluded that CBD alone was an effective treatment.
Researchers explained that humans have a naturally occurring endocannabinoid system, which regulates a number of physiological processes as well as the skeleton. The human brain and body are thus prepped to be responsive to cannabinoids, even those from an outside source like marijuana.
Gabet of the Bone Research Laboratory at Tel Aviv University and the late professor Itai Bab of the Bone Laboratory at Hebrew University led the research.
A number of studies in recent years have demonstrated the medical potential of marijuana. Purified forms of cannabis have been tied to better blood sugar control and may help slow the spread of HIV. A growing body of research suggests CBD may also be effective in reducing inflammation brought on by multiple sclerosis, stopping metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer, killing cancerous cells in people with leukemia and serving as an alternative antipsychotic treatment.
"The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point," Gabet said.
So, basically marijuana is now the miracle plant. Why the fuck did we ban this shit.

Hard to make a profit off a miracle plant when you can sell expensive drugs (each with their own host of side-effects) that combat individual problems, rather than having one for a whole load of problems.

I wouldn't call it a "miracle plant", but the reasons for banning it are dubious at best.

They need to legalize it.

A plant that is easy to grow, isn't chemically addictive, is virtually impossible to overdose on, has properties that can supplement or replace analgesics, and can promote appetite even in the face of things like chemo therapy? It also makes decent cordage, has cancer combating properties (we'll say those claims are questionable though), and now apparently can aid in mending broken bones.
The side effects for an adult? You eat more and enjoy yourself. No liver or kidney damage. No holes in your stomach. No heart or lung failure. If you smoke it, you fuck up your lungs a bit, though still nothing even approaching the damage done by cigarettes. No addiction (I'm looking at you, hydrocodone).
I do not use marijuana in any capacity, but it is pretty damn close to a miracle plant.
I frequently use Marijuana and I can attest that it is indeed a miracle plant.
It also makes decent cordage
Actually it's inferior to most natural and artificial fibers used for cordage these days, hardly anyone uses it anymore.

I'd consider the humble potato to be more of a miracle plant than marijuana.

The humble potato has few medicinal applications if any, and is a nightmare for people with diabetes, or trying to lower cholesterol. But hey, way back in medieval times, it was a miracle plant when food was hard to grow.

Just because you can have vodka and fries from one plant does not make it a mira- who the fuck am I kidding? Of course it's a miracle plant.
Marijuana is a miracle plant as well though, as are all plants. We're all miracles yo. This existence is nothing short of one miracle after the next. *redeyes*

Potatoes nearly killed Ireland, if that ain't a miracle then I don't know what is.

Yeah, it isn't the best. Hence "decent" cordage.
im gonna smoke out my kids instead of giving them milk when they grow up so they can be healthy, thank you science

The reasons were racial and financial, dubious is an understatement.

It's still a miracle plant today in terms of its ability to feed billions of people. Not to mention that it's also fairly nutritious (you can survive on a diet of almost nothing but potatoes and milk).
It can grow almost anywhere, it's cheap, can be fed to animals or used to make alcoholic drinks, etc.
Hemp meanwhile was largely abandoned as a major crop by the 20th century and now only enjoys limited usage, while Marijuana survives solely because people enjoy smoking it.

Just please stop...
<about the ganja>

Personally, the ganja kills my appetite.
I often find myself overwhelmed by the pile of food on my plate that I'm supposed to consume. I'd just gnaw at the edges of the food, making sounds of discomfort, and pushing away the plate slowly like a dissatisfied house cat.

A lot of farmers were considering feeding pigs marijuana, they say the pork tastes better.

Considering? May I have a source?

Well, some nuts and similar small snacks are alright. And almost any kind of drink. :v:
Meanwhile I'm over here sighing, 'cause the Tories won't let weed be legal over here ever unless someone bakes Theresa May.

This isn't some huge amazing thing. They've discovered that a specific compound in marijuana, used alone, shows a notable, not extreme, improvement for recovering broken bones.
In rats.
Cures pre-cancerous cells, eases tourrettes, arthritis and epilepsy, among other things, fuels inspiration and creativity.... What's not to love about weed! :joy:

Pretty much. Marijuana is the sort of thing that scientific illiterates like to tout as some kind of wondrous thing. In reality it's got some interesting uses, but these are exaggerated or invented a lot of the time.
As far as miracles go, weed is the best fucking one.

Ah yes, a plant with below-average medicinal capabilities and little to no industrial use, so much better than cinchona, which'll cure malaria, or aloe vera for burns, or astragalus for a better immune system, or any of the hundreds of other plants that have significant medicinal properties. Or potatoes, the lifeblood of the Irish.
But hey it'll get you high so fuck it 420 420 420 smoke weed

Little to no industrial use? Have you heard of hemp string/cloth? Or how about just the fact that legalization alone can EXTRAORDINARILY help with the debt problems around the world? I mean fuck it right lets just keep the drug lords making millions off of something that has no reason to be illegal. PLUS fuck yeah it'll get you high, what's wrong with that?

But doesn't that argument work on the flip side? It's not as if you can deny the actual established medicinal properties of cannabis (oh wait you don't, you just attack the dubious claims that are occasionally made) and what they do to help patients of certain illnesses just because you want to push your ignorant agenda
