A young female zoo keeper died last night hours after being savaged by a tiger.
Sarah McClay, 24, was mauled in an enclosure during public feeding time for the centre's big cats.
A police spokesman said the zoo keeper had suffered "serious bite injuries to her head and neck".
Paramedics were called to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, at Daltonin-Furness, Cumbria, at around 3.50pm.
The keeper was airlifted by helicopter to Royal Preston Hospital but could not be saved.
It is unknown whether members of the public witnessed the attack.

Police confirmed that no visitors were at risk when the incident took place. The park, which opened in 2004, is home to a 12-year-old Amur tiger. The endangered breed, of which around 300 still exist, can grow to 9ft in length.
Ms McClay was very experienced in looking after big cats and that he had no explanation as to why she had entered the enclosure.
"After investigation by the authorities here and the police, it does seem that she just basically failed to follow the correct procedures. For some unknown reason, an inexplicable reason, because there is no reason for why she did it, she opened the door and went into the tiger enclosure and straight into the tigers, and now we'll never know why."

UPDATE: SHE MAY HAVE BEEN DRAGGED INTO THE PEN
Cumbria Police said a tiger escaped from its pen and attacked Ms McClay who was in a staff area.
Detectives said either "human or mechanical" error could have led to the tiger's escape.
Det Chief Insp Bob Qazi, of Cumbria Police, aid: "It is vitally important that we discover what exactly happened in the big cat enclosure building that led to Sarah coming into contact with the tiger.
"I want to emphasise there is no suggestion of any foul play or any issue of suicide or self-harm from the enquiries we have made and evidence we have.
What has become apparent from our enquiries is that Sarah was going about her routine duties and was in the staff section of the enclosure building, which animals are not allowed access to, when a tiger has entered it from an adjacent pen and confronted her.
The tiger has then attacked Sarah, taking her from the building into the open-air external enclosure area where Sarah was left and later attended by staff and paramedics."
Police said compartments in the tiger enclosure were connected by lockable doors but systems in place to ensure staff and animals were kept apart had "failed".
After the attack the park was closed early and visitors evacuated from the area. It reopened on Saturday.
This is what happens when you don't follow simple instructions.
If there is one animal i would never fuck with, not even through the internet, its the tiger.
The article makes it sound like she was suicidal. If so, there's far more comfortable ways to go though, but depression/fear can make you do strange things. I hope no one - especially kids - witnessed the attack.
Just dont have much sympathy for people that do stuff like this/mess with animals like that.

She was a zookeeper.
It's not like she was a random person who jumped into the pen to mess with a Tiger...
Weirdest part for me is that I've actually been to this zoo before.

can't touch this
"Couldn't follow simple procedures"
I have been here. The tiger feeding was awesome.
They put huge chunks of meat on top of poles and the tigers climb to it and it is awesome. The animals have huge enclosures and are well kept so it is weird that this happened. It is by far the best zoo in terms of animal care I have ever seen.
Holy shit she was put in the hospital I live next to.

What about this one?
She didn't follow simple directions.
My housemate walked into my room today and said that the girl is... his sister's friend's best friend. Or something convoluted like that.
Inexplicable actions.
Apparently Hezzy met this woman :(
I don't get it
There was one LMAO pics that had a few pages of racism and starpluck banned anyone who was part of it with the reason " Didn't follow simple directions "
I don't get it
There was a massive banfest when a fake maxofs2d sfm video of scout and femscout getting it on with allegedly maxs address and shit. One of the mods said to stop discussing it all the while shit was still happening so everyone got banned for "can't follow simple directions."
If my memory serves correctly.

From the BBC article:
He said the Sumatran tiger, which has lived at the park for 10 years since it was a cub, would not be destroyed.
"He didn't do anything wrong. He's a tiger and his natural instinct is to kill. We all know that and that's why all the protocols are in place.
"He didn't make a mistake, he was just there. We don't blame him for what happened."
Gordon followed standard insertion procedures for a non-standard specimen, and we still saw a resonance cascade.
