"Unless you've never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather chair or eaten meat, save your condemnation."
You're right, Sarah, we'll all just go fuck ourselves now.
The snotty quote was posted by Sarah Palin on (like all the great frontier women who've come before her) her Facebook page to respond to the criticism she knew and hoped would be coming after she hunted, killed and carved up a Caribou during a segment of her truly awful reality show, Sarah Palin's Alaska, broadcast on The-Now-Hilariously-Titled Learning Channel.
I eat meat, chicken and fish, have shoes and furniture made of leather, and PETA is not ever going to put me on the cover of their brochure and for these reasons Palin thinks it's hypocritical of me to find what she did heart-stoppingly disgusting. I don't think it is, and here's why.
Like 95% of the people I know, I don't have a visceral (look it up) problem eating meat or wearing a belt. But like absolutely everybody I know, I don't relish the idea of torturing animals. I don't enjoy the fact that they're dead and I certainly don't want to volunteer to be the one to kill them and if I were picked to be the one to kill them in some kind of Lottery-from-Hell, I wouldn't do a little dance of joy while I was slicing the animal apart.
I'm able to make a distinction between you and me without feeling the least bit hypocritical. I don't watch snuff films and you make them. You weren't killing that animal for food or shelter or even fashion, you were killing it for fun. You enjoy killing animals. I can make the distinction between the two of us but I've tried and tried and for the life of me, I can't make a distinction between what you get paid to do and what Michael Vick went to prison for doing. I'm able to make the distinction with no pangs of hypocrisy even though I get happy every time one of you faux-macho shitheads accidentally shoots another one of you in the face.
So I don't think I will save my condemnation, you phony pioneer girl. (I'm in film and television, Cruella, and there was an insert close-up of your manicure while you were roughing it in God's country. I know exactly how many feet off camera your hair and make-up trailer was.)
And you didn't just do it for fun and you didn't just do it for money. That was the first moose ever murdered for political gain. You knew there'd be a protest from PETA and you knew that would be an opportunity to hate on some people, you witless bully. What a uniter you'd be -- bringing the right together with the far right.
(Let me be the first to say that I abused cocaine and was arrested for it in April 2001. I want to be the first to say it so that when Palin's Army of Arrogant Assholes, bereft of any reasonable rebuttal, write it all over the internet tomorrow they will at best be the second.)
I eat meat, there are leather chairs in my office, Sarah Palin is deranged and The Learning Channel should be ashamed of itself.
God damn animal rights activists
Never heard of this Aaron Snorkin, but from what I can tell, he's explaining things we already know?
He's a screenwriter. He did The West Wing, The Social Network, and some things.
Leather computer chairs are NOT a good idea.
she wasn't exactly torturing it, it took one shot and it was down, at least that's what was on the video I watched.
anyway she's dumb and he's somewhat right, although I didn't think it was heart-stoppingly disgusting, I just thought she was acting dumb, and comparing her to Michael Vick and saying that she was torturing it was just as dumb as the way she was acting about her killing it.
I've gone hunting. I guess that makes me an animal torturer too.

False equivalence. He gives a fairly well-reasoned, if hyperbolic, explanation of his position. Palin doesn't. Saying "oh well everyone is equally wrong!" is intellectually lazy.

His article is too emotional and as you said hyperbolic to convey an effective argument. Pointing out that she killed the moose for political gain is fine. But saying that she likes to torture animals for fun makes you sound like a sensationalist prick.
He sure did burn Palin. That was one carefully crafted rant.
So apparently hunting is a form of torture? I can agree with some of the article but really?
Also, since when are editorials news?
I see nobody read the article properly. He doesn't say Palin tortured the animal! He says she killed it for fun and for political gain, which is morally wrong.
I thought we weren't allowed to post Editorials.

You aren't.
wait, you're telling me that moderators can post the stuff that regular and Gold members can't here?

Moderators can do whatever they want, this isn't some idealist democracy.
wait, you're telling me that moderators can post the stuff that regular and Gold members can't here?
no he's telling you everyone except glaber can post stuff that glaber can't post
I fucking lost it when he said "some kind of Lottery-from-Hell". Also, "I'm in film and television, Cruella".

How dare you keep the herd from over populating it's food supply.

Also, in Alaska they do a lot of hunting. I don't know the full story but I would consider a Reality TV show in Alaska that doesn't even mention hunting or show it to be pretty dumb, even for Reality TV.
Look, I hate Palin a great deal, but she shot a moose. It isn't some huge deal.
Provided you eat what you kill and preferably use as much of the corpse as is reasonably possible, then there is nothing morally wrong with that action.
Bonus points for at least respecting the animal and appreciating what it gives up for you to eat, but I'm not going to hold that one over anyone's head provided they are humane.
You shoot a moose and you basically can feed your entire family for months if you have sufficient freezer space.

He says that he doesn't have a problem with eating meat or wearing leather, but that he has a problem with torturing animals. This article is a rant about Palin. He's basically implying that Palin is an animal torturer, even if he doesn't outright say it.

Only the Palins have no need to do so.
I saw her reality show
she chartered a chopper to fly into the arctic circle to shoot a caribou, which she missed about 8 times
Then she talked about how good it is to be self-sufficient while she got back on her helicopter
I figured she'd be some kind of pro-hunter redneck but I guess that was just a fake act as well - she fails at everything
what exactly was the point of shooting the moose
I make rational non-conservative comments on a gaming web forum and I can shoot a fucking caribou better than she can
what exactly was the point of shooting the moose
Uh
To kill it so you can eat it
Lots of people hunt, I'm completely fine with it and have done it before, people just generally learn how to aim a gun before they go do so
what exactly was the point of shooting the moose
Catering to rednecks across the country.

but why
i'm like 100% sure that's not their primary food source
That rant was strangely well articulated. I enjoyed the "faux-macho shitheads" part. This Aaron Sorkin person seems good.
but why
i'm like 100% sure that's not their primary food source
It's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a hundred pounds of meat at the grocery store. Plus it's also considered a sport, and a father son pass time in many rural areas.
But that doesn't matter though, cause Palin didn't kill it for the food.
but why

Why do people go to KFC? It isn't a primary food source, but they want to eat it once in a while.
