• Gman Painting + Tutorial!

Hello, I'm Darklight, I come from prestigious communities ranging from DSRP, TnB, and the upcoming Necropolis. Obviously I'm the hated breed of a Gmod player, the roleplayer. All aside, Here's what you came for. Earlier in the year, before spring break I was assigned to make a drawing of a celebrity, be it just a person. I've chosen Gman for his rather distinctive face structure and to the fact that I would make sweet love to this man. All homesexual jokes aside, the style that the painting was to be done in was.. -Cut Out Style -4-6 Layers -Monotonous Color Gradient -Acrylic Paint I chose the simple Black and White gradient due to it fitting Gman, I was straying towards a blue, but that wouldn't work out as well. 6 Layers for a more detailed look. High fidelity for the crisp feeling. Here's how we start, you get yourself a good mugshot of your person. Attain photoshop for these next few steps. -Change the picture into a monotonous color; blue, green, red, etc. -MAKE SURE TO RESIZE PICTURE TO FIT ONTO A WHITE BLANK SHEET OF PAPER WHEN PRINTING. -Use the CutOut filter and change the settings, 4-6 layers. Fidelity at any level. High quality. -Print. Outcome: After the print is done, attain a soft sheet of paper, same size as the print. Make sure it's see-through, any material used is fine. Tape the paper onto the print for a easier task to be done. Grid the paper in 1x1 inches, anything cut off is fine. Trace every single line. I highly suggest a FINE POINT PEN. Never end up using a dull tip. I couldn't stress this enough when I was doing it. You will end up with this, Pardon it's worn out state. I was after I was using it extensively for the next task. Outcome: Now the next task is the most difficult task, You are required to have a large board that is 2x2 inches in grid. Be sure to measure the board to be exactly a 2x2 scale compared to the 1x1 sheet of paper. Calculate the measurements, length and width, this is HIGHLY crucial. There is no tracing, there is no easy way, there is hard ass balling. You are to 'eyeball' bloating from the 1x1 grid drawing onto the 2x2 grid. This is why the grid is crucially needed for this one task. This process entirely took me a month, due to my horrid case of ADD, I could've done this ENTIRELY in a lapse of 24 hours or less. :P The lack of pictures makes me regret it, I'm sorry! The next step is to use the photoshopped picture and label every layer. 1-6 White to Black. This process takes about a good 3 hours, depending on the design. Acrylic paint, everything else is explanatory really, It's just difficult on how to explain MIXING COLORS TO ATTAIN CORRECT LEVELING OF GRAY FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL LAYER BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE LIKE; "HURR, HOW DOES ONE MIXALOT? <_>" Here is my work-place! You can see the 2x2 inch bloat plus some acrylic painting already in progress! Then after about 5 good days, 3 hours each day of painting with ADD, here is the outcome. This is only 90 percent done! I did not color in the eyes, no have I polished the transitions between layers to layers! Far-away look. Close up. [I took the picture at an angle, so it now looks like he has a tumor in his forehead, disregard! ^.^] After about a good SOLID, 4 HOURS OF POLISHING AND PICKING PAINT DROPLETS AT THE EYES. FINAL Outcome! I hope you liked my painting and my guide! -Darklight
It's pretty koo. If I had time I would do it.
If you had the attention span also. :P
Pretty damn kickass result, man.
its nice, but how would that take 15 hours?
How would it not? It's a mediocre job to be honest. Just put in your time and efforts and you can get it down in NO TIME.
we have to do the same in our color n design class, and i hate it.. it's basically just a trace and no artistic talent is needed for it.. all it is , is just applying a brush to a picture that already exists.. :\ I can't believe my school is making us do this for it's midterm..

That is rather sexy.
Can you do better?
Well for a trace, the craftsmanship isn't really good. i'll upload a pic of my version of this posterize > trace thing later if you'd like, and you judge yourself, i don't want to go around claiming things that are relevant to opinion.
I mean, I agree tracing isn't much skill, but if you can't do anything better, it is good for practice.
practicing with tracing is all cool.. i agree.. but it's nothing really worth showing off..
I think it looks pretty cool.
Fucking brilliant, good work.
practicing with tracing is all cool.. i agree.. but it's nothing really worth showing off..
You're really bashing on my work here, I just thought that I'd post it for you guys to take a whiff at since it's Gman for christ sake. Negative comments aren't cool bro. :/

I have nothing against your work, just saying that you won't get "Awesome" "Best" all the time.

In our color and design class, we have these kinds of images plastered all over the walls for examples on what to achieve for an A, B, C, or F. So no offense when i see yours and say it looks like a solid C. Because the Values you chose were okay, nothing fancy. But what brings your level of work down is the solidity of shapes and form. The lining is pretty okay, but when you painted over you lost a lot of form and proper shapes, which messes with the proportions of some parts like the lips to nose. Also the values are overlapping onto each other giving a bit of an "outline" on some value shapes. Also i wasn't bashing your work when i said i hated this kind of work.. i'm just sayin we had and still have to do this with the exact steps as you did for class.. and i don't like it.. i would rather do a straight on painting, rather than get a jpg, print it out posterized, trace, and put paint on it. Me and two other people are the only illustrators in our class, the rest are industrial designers and graphic designers n what not. I talked to my teacher about it as to why we need to do this with tracing etc.. and she said the class was about learning color, we have it set like this so that every major can take part in the class without being forced to have a knowledge in drawing/art. Not defining facial shapes etc.. heads/hands comes later.. i was like k w/e :\ So please don't just resort to rating me dumb/agree and calling me a basher, just because i didn't say your work was godly. also this was our last assignment were i literally spent 40 minutes on before class started and got a c+ on it.. http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7640/20090708174851.jpg.. i rushed through it cause it's only the practice for our midterm.. which is due next week, i don't wanna do it lol.. But yeah, as you can see, my craftsmanship is pretty terrible here, i slopped the colors n paint on in a hurry, the only reason i didn't fail this was cause the choice of values and hues i used for the paint.
Good job! It's really awesome.
olo, Monotonous Color Gradient. Also, as cool as the product is +0 respect points for just tracing something from photoshop.

I took a picture of Gman whilst he was transparent in HL2: EP2 in the Alyx scene with the vortigaunts. I had to edit out the background alot to get just his face. Why? Cause at the moment, I had the school computer, websites are blocked.
Rating me dumb doesn't change the fact that it's not monotonous.

Comon man, it's not that hard to just fill in the shapes with proper values.. I'm sure you could have done better than this in less time.
Bleh, kinda bad cutout, but cool idea.
