A man whose heart stopped 28 times after a road accident has thanked doctors who saved his life.
Motorcyclist Steven Nixon suffered a massive heart attack when he was in collision with a car in Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire, last year.
Paramedics at the scene revived his heart five times before he was airlifted to University Hospital in Coventry, where a team of cardiologists saved him a further 23 times.
The 44-year-old former warehouse manager also sustained a fractured skull, broken bones in his back, nerve damage and a broken right arm in the collision.
But medics in Coventry were unable to treat his injuries without first stabilising his heart, so he immediately underwent a procedure which involved taking a series of photographs of his heart to pinpoint the problem.
Cardiologists then fitted a pacemaker to stabilise the father-of-three's heartbeat and repair a torn artery, which had been causing his heart to fail.
Dr Dawn Adamson, a consultant cardiologist who treated Mr Nixon, said: "Steven is unusual because his heart developed a life-threatening rhythm disturbance not compatible with life which meant the trauma team could not treat his other injuries.
"I wanted to take him to the cardiac catheter lab to see if there was something we could do with the heart to help him.
"It was only when he was in the catheter lab that we found the main artery in the heart was torn and his heart was receiving virtually no blood supply.
"He is incredibly lucky to be alive and I am proud to be part of such an excellent team that meant we are all here today."
Mr Nixon, from Allestree, Derbyshire, returned to the hospital last Monday to thank the team who saved him, presenting doctors with flowers and chocolates.
Speaking on the first anniversary of the crash, he said: "If it wasn't for the treatment that I received at University Hospital my family would not have a father or a husband.
"I cannot thank them enough or fault the superb care that I received. They are a truly remarkable team of skilled, dedicated and compassionate people."
Since the accident Mr Nixon has undergone three operations, including a heart bypass.
He is incredibly lucky, his family must be so thankful.
What a heartwarming story.
This guy is probably Rasputin reincarnated.
Of course, you gotta acknowledge he had the help of doctors, but DAMN, I didn't think the human body can withstand being on the verge of death 28 times.
:h: :h: :h:
Cool
My hearth stops after every beat for a while, should I be worried?
I bet he skipped a beat when that happened

It's so tempting to just post that 28 times.
"so,what are you accomplishments in life that you are proud of"
"I died 28 times and lived"
"THIS MAN IS NOW HIRED!"
dumb post but I felt like posting it anyways :v:
You're not technically dead until the brain AND heart has ceased to function, which clearly isn't the case here.

thats actually pretty impressive.
Wouldn't a heart be considered stopped in between beats?
You're not technically dead until the brain AND heart has ceased to function, which clearly isn't the case here.
Actually your death shouldn't have anything to do with hearth, at all. You can live without hearth completely, with either artificial replacement, or outer support.
Wait, the first post was a joke, but what's actually funny about this one? :ohdear:
Good point.
You're not technically dead until the brain AND heart has ceased to function, which clearly isn't the case here.
Well, technically, being dead depends of two things. Brain death and Cardiac death. If you've got both, then you're totally dead. Not to mention that it's harder/impossible to make you come back from a brain death.

As long as it's a regular rhythm you'll be fine but if it is irregular you should see a doctor.
Anyways this is amazing, I remember reading a story where a man went in to cardiac arrest 10 times and was revived each time in the back of an ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Those doctors and that man...
SUPER TEAM GO!

So wait.
Alive human body - Heart function - Brain function =
I wonder if he felt it stop even a fraction of those times. Then again even once would be incredibly painful.
