A British Airways plane bound for London has caught fire at Las Vegas airport, forcing the evacuation of 172 people on board on emergency slides. Airport officials said at least 13 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. US Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the left engine of the Boeing 777-200 caught fire before take-off. The plane was seen engulfed in flames and smoke. The fire was later put out. In a distress call the plane's captain asked for the airport's emergency services: "Speedbird Mayday Mayday. Speedbird 2276 request fire services." "Speedbird 2276 heavy, we are evacuating on the runway. We have a fire, repeat, we are evacuating," he adds.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-34193767 I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself with that timing. Holy shit I love the title. Would rate you winner if I could. A side note this is a good first hand account. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/sep/09/british-airways-fire-we-saw-the-smoke-the-smell-was-bitter-it-was-time-to-panic
I admit that did make me laugh :v:
God save the Queen!
You know you're going to have a shitty luck in Vegas when this kind of stuff happens :v:
Boeing can't catch a break on these 777s
Boeing's reliability record is falling lately.
Luckily they were going about 70 knots when the pilots decided to abort. That's about half the V1 speed where they would have to take off no matter what happens. And apparently all of the ones injured are so because of the evacuation slides.
Boeing's reliability record is falling lately.
isnt it just down to there being a lot of boeing aircraft in service for a long time? idr when airbus won their big contract(s?) but i remember the transition being very sudden.

Came in here expecting a plane being retired to actually be set on fire in some bizarre celebration, not an awful accident :clickbait:
Boeing's reliability record is falling lately.
its just the 777, apparently the demand for it made the design schedule much more compact than it ought to have been for a plane outfitted with tons of new advances in aviation technology. they'll sort out all the problems, but boeing has like a 10 year backlog on the orders for that plane its ridiculous
Look at the pictures, some people took their bags with them while evacuating. Danger to themselves and others, that 2 extra seconds it takes to squeeze your suitcase through the emergency exit door could mean another person off before it potentially explodes or becomes engulfed in smoke. Like this guy Someone in a video is literally wheeling a suitcase away with a bag in the other arm.
