• UN human rights watchdog calls on Saudi Arabia to stop torturing and executing minors
A U.N. human rights watchdog has called on Saudi Arabia to end "severe" discrimination against girls and to repeal laws it said allowed children to be executed by stoning or punished with amputations and floggings. The Committee on the Rights of the Child on Friday issued the conclusions of its review of the kingdom's record of compliance with the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child. States which ratify the pact are reviewed every few years. Children over 15 years are tried as adults in Saudi Arabia and can be executed, "after trials falling short of guarantees of due process and fair trial", the report said. The UN convention defines children as under-18s. "The possibility of imposing the death penalty on children is still in place and that is a very serious concern," Jorge Cardona, a member of the committee, told a news briefing. "But also the possibility of sanctions and mistreatment, including torture, such as the possibility of being flogged or other punishments that are especially harsh." Committee chair Benyam Mezmur said it had received consistent reports that the death penalty was applied for offences committed by under-18s. "It's a very serious issue and there are only four or five countries in the world that we engage with this issue on and unfortunately Saudi Arabia is actually one of them," he said, naming the others as Iran, Pakistan, China and the Maldives. The 18 independent experts who make up the committee also condemned air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition in the war in Yemen, which it said had killed and maimed hundreds of children. There was no immediate reaction from the Saudi government to the conclusions issued on Friday despite multiple attempts by Reuters to reach officials. Many of the recommendations have been repeated since Riyadh ratified the convention 20 years ago, Cardona said.
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-un-children-idUSKCN1270LX http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/saudi-arabia-stoning-un-children-united-nations-a7349861.html
Only minors? How about you grow some fucking balls and call them out on ALL the bullshit they pull? Why the fuck only call on them to stop torturing/executing minors when they should stop torture and execution ON EVERYBODY!?

Saudi Arabia isn't exactly a country you can just strong arm into what have you.

Sure, but the government is filled with hypocritical old cunts with backwards conservative mindsets. The irony of this is that instead of cracking down on religious extremism when it first cropped up they opted to become more conservative snd cave into demands.

Al Capone didn't get busted for running a bootlegging business; he got convicted for tax evasion. This relatively small crime ended his empire. Only need an inch to take a mile.
Isn't Saudi Arabia like the head of UN's Human Rights?

Petro-dollars and politics have trumped human rights."[123] In January 2016, Saudi Arabia executed the prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr who had called for free elections in Saudi Arabia.[124]
which at the very least is very close to that. It's a complete farce (unless the ambassador in question somehow is a saint in comparison to his government, but I'm definitely not betting on that). This group here is probably independent of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
(unless the ambassador in question somehow is a saint in comparison to his government, but I'm definitely not betting on that)
Saudi Ambassadors have a tendency to torture or rape women and then hide behind Diplomatic Immunity.
Minors are a priority. They're much more likely to run into problems with law/society by mistake or by teenage rebellion. Punishments will affect them much more severly, as they're growing and have their lives ahead of them, especially when such punishments involve amputation and execution.
Oh my God that's not how it works.
I think I need some more explanation to interpret this post. What precisely were you reacting to?
talk about sensationalist Yes, saudi does execute 16 year olds for drug dealing and mass murder and etc etc, but the title makes it sound like they are torturing 5 year old kids for talking shit or something. at least we arent alone on this
Isn't Saudi Arabia like the head of UN's Human Rights?
no, that's a half truth that keeps being reiterated in every one of these threads. the "president" of the council on human rights is a South Korean dude.
Isn't Saudi Arabia like the head of UN's Human Rights?
the chair of the human rights comission is from the Saudi goverment
Really.. It's like trying to tell a heroine addict, hey, only shoot up half that bag please? for us? When half the bag is already 2 kilos heavy.

But people don't understand that.

Is it bad since saudi is in the UN and therefor should follow UN rules? probably also, I know any points I make will do absolutely nothing to persuade you seeing your last posts about this topic in threads, but think of it like this; In Saudi Arabia, people couldnt give less of a shit about lashs. In the western world, people are alarmed by this. Is this bad? Yes. Is torture still being used today in the rest of the world, including the US (cough cough waterboarding) Yes. Is it a violation of human rights? Yes. tl;dr nobody really cares about it here is what im trying to say, is it wrong because saudis in the UN? yep. is lashing wrong? idc. saudis definition of minor is different then the rest of the world

Your country has taken commendable efforts to rehabilitate ex-terrorists and turn them into productive citizens. Why should you take punitive, physically harmful actions against people that engage in non-violent offences when you attempt to rehabilitate those that are engaged or planned to engage in violent activity?
