It's possible that we will have a nuclear war and destroy civilization before this happens. But let's all just agree not to, okay?
So, on every desk, there will be a large touchscreen with a virtual keyboard. Not necessarily "part" of the desk, but at least on top of the desk. Possibly, these will be portable, we'll carry them around (but I think they would be pretty heavy, so I would rather not). They would look like this:

But here's the best part. See that slot right there? That's for USB slot right there? That's for your backpack.

You could carry that thing in your pocket. Here's how small it is:

So you just plug your backpack into your desk, and you have all of your stuff right there. So, yeah. That's my take on it.

Sorry, I thought I was posting in general discussion but it and realized this was the news subforum right as I pressed "post thread."
Someone please move this to general discussion, thank you in advance. Or, if it sinks, just delete it.
So who published this article again?
Sounds nice, but i think it'll be a while.
wait so the backpack is smaller than an atom... and how are you meant to see it?
Does this have a corresponding news article detailing the plans to do this, or did you just make this up?
I published it. Nah, just kidding, I thought I was posting in general discussion.
Someone move it there please, thank you in advance.
Why do you need a clumsy USB when you can have all your books and shit on your personal online school account?
So the flash drive is as small as an atom?
I would lose it all the time.
my school still has windows xp and like internet explorer 5, soooo i'm pretty sure i'll never see this.
The USB is the size of a neutron?
And when it does arrive, sit back and watch it get vandalized.
Around here they're closing schools and cramming the kids in tighter because they can't afford to keep them open. Somehow I doubt they'll find the money for this shit anytime soon.
How do you make things smaller than an atom when things are made of atoms

Fucking dammit, I wish we would get rid of that older symbol for atoms and revert to the more modern electron cloud-style atom.
As irrelevant to news as this is, it actually sounds pretty fucking cool. The desktop interface you mentioned reminds me of this:

Seems so unlikely though. :frown:
I want to view porn on my desk already.
Wait, is this The Onion?
Wait, is this The Onion?
Nah this is The Stupid.
Why do I subscribe to this.
wait so the backpack is smaller than an atom... and how are you meant to see it?
Yet know where in your pocket it is?
This will not exist in schools for decades. fuck, most schools around here can barely afford to employ their teachers.
This is the stupidest thing I've read in a while.
wait so the backpack is smaller than an atom... and how are you meant to see it?
FUCKS SAKE JIMMY!
The school CANNOT keep up with the expenses of you losing your ATOM SIZED MEMORY STICK! We will write a letter home to your PARENTS, TO DISCUSS THE MATTER FURTHER.
Now get OUT OF MY SIGHT.
This is the stupidest fucking thing I've read in a while. An object smaller than an atom? Impossible and how in the hell would you use it? Interactive desks? Yeah, because the government would obviously pay for that while they're still only paying the teachers 30-50 thousand dollars a year and can barely afford to pay them that? Right?

Motherfucking agreed.

Why not make them to scale, as well?
If you want the protons and neutrons to be one pixel large you'd have to put the electrons at the edge of your monitor.

You know that exist right? It's called the Microsoft Surface
So in other words children of the future won't be able to write.
