(CNN) - Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, a socially moderate Republican, announced on Tuesday his support for same-sex marriage, becoming the second Republican in the chamber to support it. "Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage," he wrote in a statement. "Our time on this earth is limited, I know that better than most. Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back - government has no place in the middle."
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/04/02/republican-sen-kirk-endorses-same-sex-marriage/
Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back - government has no place in the middle.
So true... [editline]7th April 2013[/editline]
When I climbed the Capitol steps in January, I promised myself that I would return to the Senate with an open mind and greater respect for others
Everyone should have this mindset in congress, not just him.

Very eloquently said. I think if he can drive that last bit, they can make some serious progress.
...and so the dominoes fall.
I hope so. I've said this in every thread like this, if the republican party doesn't get with times, it'll never win an election again.

Their current stereotype is stinky. Not to say that he isn't right, or that I think he's stupid for supporting it (I back him 100% for doing that), but I'm just pointing out that it probably has at least some political motivation behind it. But if that's what it takes to make the country's legislation support marriage equality, then I have no qualms about whether or not it's politically motivated.
Wow, I like this chap. I had hoped the previous few GOP members 'coming out' so to speak would usher in a new precedent, turns out that might be the case. However, the meaning justifies the end in these cases.
Hey, that's my senator.
Are the GOP actually becoming sensible
Maybe they realized you need to appeal to more than upper class white christians voters if you want to win the election.
progress
Maybe they realized you need to appeal to more than upper class white christians voters if you want to win the election.
A lot of my family-members are middle and upper class white Christian voters and a lot of them are even sick of the GOP.

Mark Kirk had a stroke which significantly impacted him. Maybe it truly changed him?
