The reported victory -- long awaited by weary residents along the coast -- is the most significant milestone yet in BP's effort to control one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. Kent Wells, a BP PLC vice president, said at a news briefing that oil stopped flowing into the water at 2:25 p.m. CDT after engineers gradually dialed down the amount of crude escaping through the last of three valves in the 75-ton cap. "I am very pleased that there's no oil going into the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, I'm really excited there's no oil going into the Gulf of Mexico," Wells said. The stoppage came 85 days, 16 hours and 25 minutes after the first report April 20 of an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that killed 11 workers and triggered the spill. Now begins a waiting period to see if the cap can hold the oil without blowing a new leak in the well. Engineers will monitor pressure readings incrementally for up to 48 hours before reopening the cap while they decide what to do. Though not a permanent fix, the solution has been the only one that has worked to stem the flow of oil since April. BP is drilling two relief wells so it can pump mud and cement into the leaking well in hopes of plugging it for good by mid-August. BP has struggled to contain the spill and had so far been successful only in reducing the flow, not stopping it. The company removed an old, leaky cap and installed the new one Monday. Between 93.5 million and 184.3 million have already spilled into the Gulf, according to federal estimates.
It's about time they close this thing. But the gulf is still ruined.
yayyy
For good this time? Finally.
Great news.
Hurrah, now fix the mess in the sea.
Now lets get those relief wells drilled.
Now all they have to do is clean it up.
How long until they crash another robot into it?
Now all they have to do is clean it up.
Oh that's all? ... you make it sound like that's not a big deal. I would think that cleaning it up would be more difficult than fixing a leak in an oil well
Oh that's all? ... you make it sound like that's not a big deal. I would think that cleaning it up would be more difficult than fixing a leak in an oil well
His post smacks of sarcasm to me Anyway, this is good news.
Hell, it's about time.
Watch BP's stock soar.
Yay! Too bad the spill has already caused irreversible damage to the gulf.
About fucking time
:downsbravo:

Their courses looks perfectly fine to me. [editline]07:13AM[/editline] Oh, wait, you meant gulf!
Yay! Too bad the spill has already caused irreversible damage to the gulf.
All damage done is reversible.
All damage done is reversible.
Yeah, but timetravel and Chuck Norris is out of the question.
Not a single person I've talked to about this said "Yay I'm happy!" Maybe it's because they know BP's disregard of safety and rules ripped the ocean about 5 new assholes and dog-pounded each one with the LA Lakers. But whatever, at least the first positive thing in this whole mess has finally been accomplished.
Yeah, but timetravel and Chuck Norris is out of the question.
Everything gets fixed eventually.
Yay! :toot: Now for the fun part, clean up and damage control.
Hooray, we succeeded at winning the mission!
It would take approximately 50,000 volunteers to help clear up this mess in a year.
Everything gets fixed eventually.
Fine! Have your goddamn rainbow.
That's the first bit of good news BP has had in an age.
Fine! Have your goddamn rainbow.
It's fairly logical. If you have enough volunteers to help clean up the mess, eventually the mess will be cleaned up. I don't see why you're all so negative about it. BP could pay a load of unemployed people to clean it up for a bit money.
yep, it only took them three months
Everything gets fixed eventually.
Except for ya know, the lives lost in the blast, the animals dying from the oil.
They may have stopped the leak, but they haven't fixed it, so don't celebrate just yet.
