I believe in love. I think that one can develop a special kind of affection for another person over time. However, I do not believe that we are destined for anyone in particular. That just sounds too incredulous for me. Sounds like fantasy.
What about you?
People aren't "destined" to be with each other, but love really exists. It's a very strong emotion and can lead to a lot of happiness or pain, depending on how you play your cards.
No.
You find an appropriate mate, fuck, have children, then all the cute little chemicals and peptides stop being produced by the brain. 'Soulmates' make no sense because evolution tells us to fuck as much as possible.
... But, trying not to sound like a party-popper: Humans are a sentient species. We rationalize things. We have become smart enough to bypass instict (This is why sex gives us pleasure, actually, because we're smart enough to ignore the instict to have sex and the species would die out). So while we philosophize stuff we might invent something close to, er, love. Real love.
I believe in soulmates. I believe one can develop that kind of affection for somebody... which could even trascend death. Check out Carl von Cosel case...
Carl Tanzler or sometimes Count Carl von Cosel (February 8, 1877 – July 23, 1952) was a German-born radiologist at the United States Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida who developed a morbid obsession for a young Cuban-American tuberculosis patient, Elena Milagro "Helen" de Hoyos (July 31, 1909 - October 25, 1931), that carried on well after Hoyos succumbed to the disease. In 1933, almost two years after her death, Tanzler removed Hoyos' body from its tomb, and lived with the corpse at his home for seven years until its discovery by Hoyos' relatives and authorities in 1940.
Never heard of elderly couples that, when one of them passes away, the other one dies a few months later, pretty much "out of sadness"?

Uhh, that's not being soulmate, that's being a perverted old fuck.

Necrophiles have feelings too :sympathy:
Love is just chemicals
True, but isn't everything chemicals to us? Everything we feel as emotional beings is really just chemicals and electrical impulses in our brains. Love is just as real as any other thing you can feel or think of. We have nothing else to compare "reality" to than our own thoughts.

I know, that's why they only pick partners that won't laugh at their small penis.
Love exists
not for everybody but for many.

That's true. In the end we're all a bunch of cells rolling around in the intercellular liquid.
Or as Carl Sagan said...
"WE'RE ALL MADE OUT OF STAR STUFF!"
Fuck yeah, Sagan.
Of course people experience what they call love. Feelings are relative.
Soul mates be real or not, it's healthier for me to believe it is so.
Love is a emotional and chemical reaction to subconscious (or sometimes conscious) happenings and beliefs that developed naturally as a form of protection of children back when we were still hunting mammoths. The need to survive required a mating pair to remain attached and protective. The whole modern social hooplah about love and soulmates and the emotional junk we put onto it is all BS. We can manipulate, both intentionally and un, our feelings of love and how and when we get it.
So basically, yes, it exists, but I do not believe in love as a force or emotion, just a complex series of emotional responses to subconscious stimuli.
Personally, a physical or basic emotional attraction that is morphed to a loving relationship is far more realistic and overall better than the belief that there is a set person for you and that some magical force will bind you together.

There's always rape.
soulmate is just another way to say you're really compatible
Theoretically (if you could time travel and had a really great memory) you could try having a relationship with every single woman on Earth and, at the end of it all, one of them would have been the best relationship (since it's essentially impossible that two relationships would be equal in every way).
I suppose you could call that person your "soul mate", however the chances of you practically finding that person are very unlikely indeed - and even if you did you would have no way of knowing that that's the best relationship you could possibly have. And who knows, maybe you're a closet sociopath and are incapable of having a satisfying relationship with anyone.
Considering how many people claim to have found their one and only soul mate and considering what I previously pointed out, it's pretty clear that people are just being naive and idealistic. Love isn't about finding the one person for you. It's about finding a person you can be happy and satisfied with.
tl;dr Everyone has a "soul mate" in the sense of that person being the best person for you to fall in love with, but there's no magical force drawing you together; good luck finding them.
I'm going to go with the majority of this. It's extremely rare for two people to like the same things in life.
That's what makes us human. Agree to disagree.
Not to mention the rarity of your girlfriend/wife saying "Oh I hate you so much! Let's just fuck and forget about it!"

If I found out somebody was doing that my my corpse, I'd totally come back as a zombie and fuck their shit up.
You guys are fucking depressing. Quit analyzing the so-called myth of love and just enjoy the good feelings. Life is shitty enough already.
I believe love is another emotion/feeling adapted so that humans have a sexual attraction toward eachother so that we can continue to propagate the species.
Love is a common chemical reaction. I describe it as lust meets friendship.
Soul mates are just bullshit though. It's so unlikely that there is only one person for you, ever.
