The violence claimed the lives of nine girls and one boy at the Tasso da Silveira public school in the Realengo neighborhood on the city's west side. The wounded were ferried to local hospitals via helicopter from a makeshift airfield erected at a nearby soccer field. Officials said that, given the gravity of some of the injuries, the death toll could climb. Police said that Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, a 24-year-old former student, entered the school at the start of classes about 8:00 a.m. local time. About 400 students were in class at the time of the attack, local officials said. Mr. Oliveira gained entry by telling school officials he was there to give a presentation to students. He was armed with two .38-caliber revolvers and "a lot of ammunition," police officials said. A nearby police officer responded to the screams of children and exchanged fire with Mr. Oliveira, who was wounded in the shootout before turning the gun on himself, police said. "It's an extremely sad situation," said Col. Mario Sergio Duarte, commander of Rio de Janeiro's Military Police. "The attack was done deliberately, and would have been much worse had a local police officer working in the area not responded." Mr. Oliveira left a letter, saying that he wanted to kill everyone and commit suicide, according to police. Officials will hold a press conference later Thursday to give further details about the shooting rampage, which is without precedent in Brazil. Television images showed frantic parents descended on the school in search of children who attended classes there. Police officers comforted many mothers, who screamed in anguish as they learned about the attack. "It was a terrible scene, with children hit by bullets. At least 30 people were hit during the attack," Col. Evandro Bezerra, a spokesman for the city's fire and rescue workers, told the local O Globo television network. In an interview on the O Globo network, one man who rushed to the school shortly after the attack in search of his children called what he found inside the school "a war scene." "I've never seen anything like it," the man said. "This type of thing happens in the United States, not here." The man said he saw Mr. Oliveira slumped on a second-floor stairwell with a wound to his head. Some wounded students fled the school, making their way to a nearby house. Television images showed the door smeared with blood, while the sidewalk outside the house was covered in drops of blood. "I heard a lot of shooting, then the children came out running toward my house," the unidentified man said. "One boy was bleeding heavily from his arm, where he'd been shot. I told him to stay calm and not move around so it wouldn't bleed more." The man said that his children studied at the school, but were on an upper level of the four-story building. The man's children heard the shots, but were not injured.
Wow this is one hell of a depressing Thursday.
The shooter is believed to be Islamic.........
calling BS(not on the shooting, on the shooter being Muslim) , every time something like this happens they always first point too Islam, It's probably just some local nutjob.
This type of thing happens in the United States, not here
One of the most ignorant statements i've seen recently.
Agreed on horseshit, guys not Islamic at all. (edit: Least I can't find proof of it) I feel bad for them honestly getting blamed for literally everything But more relevant is this, I hope they release the note or at least a censored version, this is fucking disgusting and I wish the best for the families, the monster deserves to rot in hell
People only get killed in some countries, didn't you know? An elementary school? That's fucking awful.
About the "Least I can't find proof of it" part, on TV they say that he said himself "Allah told me to do this" and muslim stuff on his house. At this point, not much is trustable, since people are just milking at it, but we'll be sure of it later. He also made a suicide letter, where he said he was HIV positive, amongst other shit. Some pics here, including the asshole: http://g1.globo.com/rio-de-janeiro/fotos/2011/04/veja-imagens-do-caso-de-tiros-em-escola-na-zona-oeste-do-rio.html
That's fucking disgusting This is the kind of shit that makes my stomach turn
One of the most ignorant statements i've seen recently.
Germany, remember?
I can't imagine how the shooters family is taking this. Holy shit thinking about this just pisses me off
I don't blame the shooter. You can't help it when you're mentally unstable.
I'm not sure if the mad news poster guy posted that the shooter was adopted or something, His adoptive parents are muslin. Or something like that.
he needs to be rehabilitated and given job trai- oh wait in all seriousness this is fucking tragic, my condolences are with the families of the victims
One of the most ignorant statements i've seen recently.
Brazilian people are ignorant. Most of them anyways. (User was banned for this post ("Stereotypical crap" - Starpluck))
I call BS on the whole story, the minimum age to own a gun in Brazil is 25, and this kid was only 24. Unless...do you suppose...gun control didn't stop a crazed gunman from murdering a dozen children? I don't know what to believe in anymore. I thought this sort of thing was limited to the US, where our gun control is so lax that we hand out Glocks to kids, as the world media well knows. IF ONLY THEY HAD MADE THE SCHOOL A GUN-FREE ZONE!
One of the most ignorant statements i've seen recently.
it is true to a certain extent the US has the most school shootings by far. no other country even comes close.
That's terrible. :smith: I always wondered why people do crap like this. Even if he does 'Have the AIDs virus', I see no reason for him to take it out on innocent kids.

snip
The guy also had AIDS and was determined to suicide after the attack :| Probably decided to do this shit because he knew he would die either way or something.
Or maybe because he was well-known and there was no reason to think that someone everyone trusted would kill kids.
He told the entrance's guard that he would do a speech at the school.
Doesn't mean it's limited to a single country
I didn't say it was the guy who the made the comment is somewhat right though. school shootings outside of the US aren't that common.
sad to hear about. such unnecessary violence.
Oh really? Bawwhaww to you too man. This world is spinning on needless suffering, violence and guilt! And these school shootings are not that, just 1 dumbass psycho who wants to kill and to finish it all they choose the most coward way to kill themselves to escape the consequences. Truly an outrage, carve his heart out and yell "BEHOLD, A HEART OF A TRAITOR!"

Arm the teachers, if it's a trouble filled school.
