• Using tools in Illustrator

I tried google, and although there were related topics, I couldn'd find what I was looking for so, FacePunch, I am in need of your assistance. I'm a complete newbie with Illustrator, and it just won't let me use that erasor tool, it makes that dull ding sound, indicating I need to turn something on / off or convert or whatever, I've tried my best to figure it out but well, I guess I just don't have them smarts. So can you arty farty folks help me some and give me that much needed vector erasing knowledge? Thanks in advance!
Could we get a screenshot of exactly what you are trying to erase, possibly under the exact same circumstances under which you could not use the tool?

I forget the exact names for the tools, as i'm still a novice at illustrator myself. However, to delete all or part of a vector object, you need to do the following: To delete an entire path's shape: 1) Find the "Black Mouse Cursor" tool, and then click on any point of your vector's path. 2) Press the delete key. To delete 1 point of your vector's path, or even move it around: 1) Find the "White Mouse Cursor" tool, and then click on the point of your vector's path. 2) Press the delete key. That's what I do at least.
