• Surrealstep - Slowing down Dubstep songs to achieve a surreal ambient effect (With Tutorial!)

Here's an example of it ( Skrillex - First of the Year (Equinox) slowed down by 800% ) How to accomplish this: Download PaulStretch from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/hypermammut/files/paulstretch/2.2/paulstretch_win32-2.2-2.zip/download Run the Executable Open a music file from File > Open Audio File... ( Ones that I know work are .wav and .mp3 ) Keep everything at default settings for 800%, or change the slider accordingly to adjust how slow you want it. At this point, you can use the media controls at the bottom of the program to hear your preview. Now, click File > Render To Audio File... and select a location and a name for your file ( This will save it as a .wav file, but you can also save it as .ogg if you want to be hipster ) This will begin the rendering process. Allow time for this to happen, the speed depends on the length of the song, and how fast your computer runs. It should look like this: When it has completed, you'll be left with a large, uncompressed >300MB file which takes up too much space. Using any audio converter, you can convert it to .mp3 for a more portable, ~64MB file. I use dbPowerAmp. And you're done! Share your results in this thread if you really like them. ( Of course, this isn't just Dubstep songs. This works for way more songs and genres than you'd think! )
Can we all stop slowing down tracks and saying OMG NEW ART FORM now please? Chopped'n'screwed hip hop and moombahton were shit enough.
Can we all stop slowing down tracks and saying OMG NEW ART FORM now please? It sounds good, it's relaxing, and surprising that such a simple edit can completely change a song. STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE
STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE
Stop saying that phrase.
wow and as soon as i thought dubstep couldnt get any shittier
35 minutes is a bit much, although it could probably be good for ambience music or similar.
When i want to render the song in the program, the 'render' button is greyed out. Why? EDIT: Already found out, you just have to write something at the end of the filename.
35 minutes is a bit much, although it could probably be good for ambience music or similar.
You can select what portion of the song you would like to render. I just uploaded the entire thing to get an idea of how the wubby parts and the piano parts sound.
there's no step in this...
So I paused my Dave Brubeck to listen to this shit? Sorry mate, it sounds as shite as the normal-tempo dubstep.
there's no step in this...
The idea isn't for step. The idea is for ambiance. It's changed genres. That is all.
Why call it surrealstep then?
If you want ambiance go listen to aphex twin.
The idea isn't for step. The idea is for ambiance. It's a completely different genre of music altogether.
Putting music though a timestretching software doesn't make a new genre...
why don't you listen to actually ambient music instead [editline]2nd October 2011[/editline]
The idea isn't for step. The idea is for ambiance. It's a completely different genre of music altogether.
it's not a new genre it's just dubstep but way slower

STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE
People have paulstretched everything from Justin Bieber to the Super Mario theme. There's nothing special about it bro
I hear no difference at all. I still can only hear shit.
I don't want to be a dick, but please don't call it a new genre. You're just pooping on the tempo and calling it ambiance. You aren't doing anything more to it either. Like Takkun said, listen to Aphex Twin. Mainly Selected Ambient Works Volume 1 and 2. Or Brian Eno.
Holy shit. This is amazing, imho. [editline]2nd October 2011[/editline] It's so goddamn beautiful. I'm getting this on my ipod, nice to chill out to. [editline]2nd October 2011[/editline] It may not be music per se, but it's still very enjoyable to listen to.
If you want ambiance go listen to aphex twin.
lol aphex twin
I wasn't trying to imply that it's a new genre, I just explained it horribly wrong. I'm saying it's not dubstep anymore. It's ambient. And what's wrong with that? Obviously some people like it, so why is it not considered music? Yes, you can go listen to other ambient music. I do listen to other ambient music. But the existence of other ambient music means this isn't actually music? I don't see why we need to be so opposed to the idea.
There's a part where it seems like you're at the beach listening to the waves ahah. It's pretty nice.

The example reminds me of some parts of the Deus Ex soundtrack.
I really only like slow dubstep tracks or drumstep. Dubstep in general doesn't make for good listening on it's own because of how irritating it normally sounds. It feels better suited for atmospheric background music instead. Skrillex's songs generally have this horrible burp sound that does not sound appealing at all. His song ruined that Syndicate trailer.

Also, this is really the wrong genre to do this with, it sounds a lot better with genres that have limited percussion and drums. Classical maybe?
I wasn't trying to imply that it's a new genre
Yes you were.
It's a completely different genre of music altogether.
I've always really liked this.
Oh yay it's like drone ambient without any of the textural interest or scale. I just love when the things that make music special are taken away.
Nothing will ever top the Bieber one, that's genuinely amazing.
