Most children would jump at the chance to pig out on hamburgers, ice cream, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, tacos and candy. But not Landon Jones. For about a year, the 12-year-old Iowa boy has had a mysterious illness. He never feels hunger or thirst and therefore refuses to eat and drink. The disorder is so rare that doctors think he may be the only person in the world with the condition, according to the Des Moines Register, which first reported his story.
The strange symptoms developed without warning a year ago. Landon awoke the morning of Oct. 14, 2013 complaining of dizziness and extreme chest congestion. A scan of his chest indicated he had a bacterial infection in his left lung, which was treated successfully.
But then he stopped eating.

I saw this on cbs news website and thought I should share. This article is truly saddening. We rely on out body to tell us when to eat. Without that we would die. I wish the lil guy all the best but damn.
kid needs to smoke some damn weed
kid needs to smoke some damn weed
"Nurse, get this man 200mg THC IV now!"
How come they can't just force feed him?
kid needs to smoke some damn weed
joking aside, I wonder if this would actually work
isnt weed used for treating people with eating disorders?

guantanamo style

I think he's old enough to have it explained to him that he needs to eat, children younger than him manage chronic diseases like diabetes with the help of a parent.

Ah, brilliant. We'll just force feed him for the rest of his life.

it said he's lost a third of his weight so far. So obviously he's not quite old enough to appreciate that he'll die without eating.

I dunno, I personally think a 12 years old should be able to comprehend the fact that you need to eat and drink to, ya know, not die.

then the boy must die

Absolutely. Its just that its really hard to eat/drink when you don't feel the urge to. Have you tried eating when you already felt full? It sucks.
I had the same thing last week when I moved out of my appartment and had to carry heavy stuff in a dusty environment. Got heartburn even from drinking tap water, so I just stopped eating all together (I didn't even have hunger so that wasn't difficult at all). I visited the doctor and he gave me some spray to clear my lungs and everything immediately started to get better.
I call it acid reflux
The boy who feels no hunger...
Will die of hunger.

I know it is used for people on chemo who lose their appetite. It helps with desire for food and helps nausea.
Although I expect they exist, I don't actually know of any other drug that promotes appetite. If nothing else we can assume that any other drug that does promote appetite is unlikely to do so in such a safe manner.
Not that this is really a long term solution. Being faded 24/7 isn't going to help.

my grandfather died of not eating after his chemo. there were drugs we got him meant to increase appettite but obviously they were only so effective
If he still has taste buds that can taste then I don't see any reason for him not to eat. It'll be like any other dieter watching how many meals he eats and the portions and whatnot. Yeah he's 12, but he's about to hit puberty full on and that might be a little weirder than now.

why haven't the neurologists thought of that you're a genius

i have eaten many many times when i didn't feel any hunger at all, this kid should be able to as well

It's not that he's incapable of eating, it's that he lacks the automatic "nudge" or urge to eat. Clearly his hypothalamus isn't functioning as it normally would, for he has constant satiety.
This sorta happened to me a couple summers ago. I couldn't really eat because I never felt hungry at all, and i could only really nibble on things or I got sick. It went away as I forced myself to eat more regular amounts, but it sucked and I lost 30 pounds in a month (and I'm already pretty light). Whatever his condition is, I hope he can get help for it.
I felt the same way for almost a month after i got food poisoning from a big-mac. I didn't feel hungry or thirsty for almost 4 weeks after. I had to force myself to drink water, though.
If only they could recreate this artificially, it'd work wonders for dieting.
Hell, he has a history of seizures, so the kid's brain probably ran the areas around the hypothalamus into a minor state of overexcitation and possibly dopaminergic death
kid needs to smoke some damn weed
The video also talked about the boy never having a desire to drink anything. I never smoked weed before, but does it also make the user thirsty?
it said he's lost a third of his weight so far. So obviously he's not quite old enough to appreciate that he'll die without eating.
If he's admitted in a Hospital setting they would definitely consider force feeding or "enteral feeding", his labs would have to be pretty out of wack to warrant that though.

No wonder he won't eat, give him some real food, not McDonalds!
And of course they treated him at the Mayo Clinic.
What if they just mention the word [sp]sour[/sp]? That always gets my mouth watering.

I have trouble getting myself to eat. I generally don't eat meals until my stomach is physically hurting. And even when I eat, I can't bring myself to eat a lot. The smallest portions generally fill me up, and I can't eat too fast or I feel like throwing up nor eat too slow because then I lose my appetite.
[editline].[/editline]
It's reached a point where I get headaches from not eating now.
There's an article about a boy possibly being the only person in the world who suffers from this abnormality and half the posts are 'yea, I'm like that too.'
I may be wrong but I would imagine as long as the kid isn't in pain when he eats, they could get him on a fairly light diet on a strict schedule. Light meals with light snacks sprinkled in.
