• China's First-Person Military Shooter Has a Terrible Message
At first, I was intrigued by the idea of a game about the Chinese military, the People's Liberation Army. But now after spending a weekend with the Glorious Mission Online' s public release, the novelty has worn off. It's Kind of Like Call of Duty, But with Chinese Nationalism This is Glorious Mission Online. An upcoming update for the online first-person shooter allows players to defend the Senkaku Islands (aka… Read… Originally slated to be a People's Liberation Army training game akin to America's Army, Glorious Mission Online is now available to the masses. Recently, the game is back in the news for offering a controversial new map that allows players to fight the Japanese military in a stage that takes place in a contested territory that both China and Japan claim as their own. Keep in mind that this is first official public release of the game. Glorious Mission Online was originally released for the Chinese armed forces. This public "test" officially launched on August 1, the 86th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army. As a whole, Glorious Mission Online seems like every other first person shooter before it. It takes elements from other shooters like Counter Strike and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and merges them into one game.
So this is where it gets interesting...
Glorious Mission Online is super political. It's not as informative as other communist propaganda games out there. For example, it doesn't bother explaining anything about the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands dispute. In this game, the islands belongs to China. End of story. There's an in-game battle is called "Return Dream of Shanghai". This is basically a confrontation between the Chinese soldiers and the Japanese soldiers based in a small section of 1940's Shanghai. The funny thing is...the Chinese soldiers are modern soldiers with modern weaponry while the Japanese soldiers look like they just stepped out of World War II. To add insult to injury, the very first line shouted at the beginning of the battle is a voice over that says, "The devils are here, kill them all!" The very last thing you hear is "Good job, the devils are dead." Oh. Now to be perfectly clear, some will argue that they don't say Japanese at all in the voice overs. In Mandarin, the voice shouts "gui zi (鬼子), which could mean any foreign devil, but here, "gui zi" is used to refer to the Japanese. What was most unsettling to me was that if you were to stand over a downed Japanese soldier, the player's gun starts emptying it's clip on the dead soldier. It's messed up, and I could not confirm that this was by design or a glitch. It was a glitch, a terrible one at that.
:tinfoil: Source : http://kotaku.com/chinas-first-perso...-me-1026025398 Also sorry if I put this in the wrong section. The chinese have outdone theirselves
wait nvm thats a gas mask
It's like chinese developers played duty calls and thought it was a real game.
Considering what the japanese have done to the chinese during WWII, you've got to understand both countries hate each others' guts. Besides how is this any different than all those Cock of Doody games where the US is masterrace and hundreds of arab terurists or military with soviet-era equipment are killed by US MAREENS with TACTICOOL WEPONS?

In other words let me be blunt and spell it out for you. People are joking about Call of Duty This game is not joking and is dead serious.
Yeah, but that isn't a government-funded military simulator.
This too
I want a giantbomb quicklook of this so bad

Also, this chinese "game" is pure propaganda.
Yeah, but that isn't a government-funded military simulator.
Different cultures, we've got a rather "politically correct" society where no such games could be funded by the gov. But hey, look at America's Army. Government funded, online shooter, propaganda game. The buttload of 14 years old playing it get it a very different way and will grow with the idea that the US Army is heroic and whatever it does is great. Pretty much like this one Chinese game. Now scenario-wise, I'd expect a western game to be more subtle than a state-funded chinese one, so of course plot twists are gonna happen. Doesn't change the fact that throughout the whole game you're commiting mass arabian and russian genocide. This isn't exactly new stuff, Hollywood does this for quite a while now with its blockbusters. Mark my words, if a war breaks out in between Mexico and the US, I'm pretty sure Call of Duty 13 will be all about kicking some mexican and spaniard ass.
At least it looks better than some Chinese made games. I've seen some and they have looked awful.
Besides being politically charged and offensive, the games have some good models that some from the Modelling section would love to get their hands on.

Otherwise, i can't see how watching a cut scene of two guys knife fighting would help train your soliders like America's Army would.

There is no going back in time..

gotyay edit: really, national revenge fantasies in popular culture aren't a new thing at all. from 19th century caricatures where the losers of a past conflict are kicking the victors ass to whole movie series like missing in action.

Dunno about MW3, but those games are more about Russian Ultranationalists
Yeah, but that isn't a government-funded military simulator.
Take a gander at America's Army 3(i think its 3) That IS a government funded military recruitment tool. The chinese one looks like it has better gameplay tho.

It was never implied that they were russian or anything in particular, the only thing that even hinted at an eastern european origin was that they spoke russian. Some missions you had to play with "local militia" too so you weren't always fighting as the US, such as missions where some members of the squad would be apart of the afghan army.
Take a gander at America's Army 3(i think its 3) That IS a government funded military recruitment tool. The chinese one looks like it has better gameplay tho.
This. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America's_Army America's Army was admitted to be a cost-effective a recruitment tool aimed at showing how army life is 'so great'. Casey Wardynski and is managed by the U.S. Army's Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis at the United States Military Academy.[2] Wardynski envisioned "using computer game technology to provide the public a virtual Soldier experience that was engaging, informative and entertaining." Honestly, there is really nothing wrong with this game other than the fact your looking at it with an outsiders perspective. In America's army you have several instances where you kill unknown 'turrests' from east asia all the while you are subjugated to the 'Merica mantra throughout the game. This is literally no different, and it's quite amusing to see people try and bash it because of it's propagandist nature.
the most obvious difference is the blatancy
I like that for the "military" version they just upped the difficulty to STALKER Misery level by making the enemy wallhacking crackshots that kill you in about 3 bullets while still retaining call of duty gameplay (6:20)

Guess that works for training situational awareness? Sorta? Maybe?
Also it looks like they balanced out the AI being able to kill you in half a second if it actually aims properly by making it stand in a single place firing wildly whenever you need to progress through the level wow such innovative game design
